FATES OF MISSING U-BOATS
UNSOLVED PAST WAR
MYSTERY
Qf the many unsolved mysteries
of the war, one of the most baffling
concerns the fate of some 28 Ger-
man U-boats, according to George
O’Brien, Fox movietone featured
player, a former naval officer him-
self, and the leading man in “The
Seas Beneath,” the first talkie of
submarine warfare.
“After the war,” O’Brien says,
“the British naval experts checked
their records of submarine sinkings
with the German figures, and many
interesting facts developed. The
Germans lost 203 of their U-boats,
including seven interned in various
neutral ports, and 14 that were
blown up by their officers when the
Flanders submarine bases were ev-
acuated.
“Of the Other 182, 59 were sunk
by gunfire from Allied warships.
Allied mine-fields accounted for 43
of the German subs, and 18 more
were sunk by being rammed by Al-
lied ships. The Allies’ own submar-
ines accounted officially for 17 more
and the ‘mystery ships,’ or Q-ships,’
are known to have destroyed 11 U-
boats. Allied aircraft sank 6 more
by aerial bombing, but 28 others are
still unaccounted for, and neither
the German nor the Allied records
contain any clue to their fate.”
“The Seas Beneath,” coming to
the Mission Theatre Friday and Sat-
urday is based on the activities of
an American “mystery ship” work-
ing in conjunction with an American
submarine to capture a noted U-
boat off the Canaries.
Marion Lessing, the Viennese star,
makes her feature-picture debut as
the German heroine of this product-
ion, and the supporting cast includes
Warren Hymer, William Collier, Sr.,
who also staged the production; Wal-
ter C. Kelly and Mona Maris. John
Ford directed the film from Dudley
Nichols’ screen play and dialog.

MUSSOLINI DECLARES
WAR IN ITALY
ON ANTI-FASCISTS
Rome, June 3.—Premier Mussoli-
ni Wednesday declared war on anti-
Fascism in Italy, “under whatevel
banner” and, according to news from
the Vatican, at least one of the
Catholic Action society leaders was
under arrest.
The one Catholic Action leader
who was named by the Vatican as
having been arrested was an at-
torney named Corsanego. It was
said he probably soon would be on
his way to political exile on the is-
land of Lipari.
Other reports said a dozen of the
Catholic Action leaders had been
arrested in various cities. It was
said they were men who had oppos-
ed Fascism previously.
Premier Mussolini’s “declaration
of war” against anti-Fasci&ts was
made at a special meeting df a small
body of Fascist leaders which form-
ed the directorate of the party, ffhe
Premier presided at the meeting and
it was said he definitely mentioned
the Catholic Action society.
Orders were issued to the 9,000
Fascist groups in Italy, with more
than 1,000,000 active members, to
be guided by the thought that Fas-
cism, “is firmly determined not to
permit whatever remained of Fas-
cism, and which thus far has been
spared, to find refuge and protec-
tion.”
The groups were told that those
who gave their lives for Fascism “de-
manded that it be defended at any
cost.”
The directorate charged some sec-
tions of the Catholic Action society
had been “openly and surreptiously
hostile” to Fascism.
With this blunt statement of pol-
icy the Duce and his group of lead-
ers began* to formulate plans to
take into Fascism’s fold the young'
Catholics from the dissolved groups.
Catholic youths who may wish to
join the Fascist clubs, however,
would have to hurry, it was said, be-
cause a time limit has been placed
on recruiting in some sections.
In a speech to the College of
Chaplains of Immigrants, reported
during the day in the newspaper Os-
servatore Romano, Pope Pius XI,
was quoted as having said Tuesday
night that the dissolution of the
'Catholic youth clubs violated the
right of the Church to form and to
guide young people and that it also
violated the natural law, “made for
the good of souls.”
He denounced the government’s
official comminique, which asserted-
Catholic societies “not directly con-
nected with the national Fascist par-
ty” had been dissolved, “without
the slightest incident.”
Referring to the phrase “without
the slightest incident,” the Pontiff
declared:
“That expression is worth a treas-
ure. It is enough to think of all the
incidents, the irreverences, indecen-
cies and vandalism in Rome and in
smaller cities; in the edifices which
enjoy extraterritoriality. It is en-
ough to consider the offenses to the
person of the Supreme Pontiff.
“This procedure of dissolution
was not taken by legal means be-
cause the Catholic Action society is
under the protection of the Concor-
dat, which has become the law of
the State and is supported by a
bilateral pact. This was takea un-
der orders from the police.”
It was “ridiculous,” the Pope said,
that anyone should accuse organiza-
tions of Catholic young women of
engaging in politics and equally ri-
diculous to lay the same charges
■against organization of Catholic
young men which in the last few
years have given 5,400 priests to the
church.
The government refused all in-
formation on the number of arrests.
The Fascist directorate also de-
cided that a mass meeting of Fas-
cists will be held next month and a
big “first decennial exposition of
the Fascist revolution” will be held
in Rome, opening October 27, the
anniversay of the eve of the Fascist
“march on Rome.” It will continue
until March 23 of next year, the an-
niversary of the founding of Fas-
cism.

Don’t Rasp Your Throat
With Harsh Irritants

The great Lord Tennyson in o beau-
tiful poem refers to a woman’s Adam’s
Apple as "The warm white apple of her
throat." Consider your Adam’s Apple.
Touch it—your Adam’s Apple—That is
your larynx —your voice box —it con-
tains your vocal chords. When you con-
sider your Adam’s Apple you are
considering your throat—your vocal
chords. Protect the delicate tissues
within your throat. Be careful in your
choice of cigarettes. Don’t rasp your
throat with harsh irritants! Reach for a
LUCKY instead. Here in America LUCKY
STRIKE is the only cigarette which brings
you the added benefit of the exclusive
"TOASTING" Process, which includes the
use of modern Ultra Violet Rays. It is
this exclusive process that expels certain
harsh irritants present in all raw tobaccos.
These expelled irritants are sold to
manufacturers of chemical compounds.
They are not present in your LUCKY
STRIKE. And so we say "Consider your
Adam’s Apple."

HOPKINS COUNTY
PEOPLE IN REUNION
IN COLLIN COUNTY
One of the several pleasant occa-
sions was May 10th., at Forest Grove
on Mothers Day, a reunion of the
Cornelius family.
These people were pioneers of that
section and the parents are buried in
the Fitzhugh cemetery near the old
church.
Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius were great-
ly loved by every one and on this
occasion it was a pleasant sight to
note the numerous descendants who
came from far and near to place
flowers on their graves. It had been
planned to hold a family reunion and
spend the day there among the
beautiful trees and flowers and meet
old friends of childhood days. While
the weather was threatening, yet it
seemed not too dampen the pleasure
of the participants who joined in
happy conversation and singing fa-
miliar old songs, it was a day that
will long be remembered by the fam-
ily. They lingered as though they ius, Joyden King, Virginia King, Ro-
wished they could just stay close
where their loved ones rested.
Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius, though
they have been sleeping in that “Si-
lent City of the Dead” for many
years, will be remembered by many
—especially by the older settlers.
