Washington January 2G There are
many lawjers who think that Guiteau
can be taken out of jail on n habeas cor-
pus It is understood that Attorney
General Brewster has expressed au
opinion that there are good grounds for
au application for a habeas corpus in
Guiteaus case If counsel for tho as-
sassin move for a habeas corpus the at-
torney will personally in the court
argue against it There is one point
which indicates very clearly what tho
decision of tho court in banc which is
to be appealed to by Guiteau will be
That point is that before delivering bis
chargo to tho jury Judge Cox submitted
it to his colleagues who constitute the
court in bane and they all approved it
The charge was against tho prisoner
When Will Ho Swins
The subject of Guiteaus hanging is
now being thoroughly discussed and it
seems a certainty that he cannot be
hanged before July Indeed the law of
the district is that no person found
guilty of murder cau be hanged until
thirty days after the expiration o the
term following that at which he may be
sentenced The present term began
Monday and Guiteau will bo sentenced
during it Tho next term will probably
eud Juno 1 aud thirty dajs from that
date will have to elapse before Guiteau
can be executed

sent Secretary Blaine to rummaging
through tho ancient documents of the
White House The search was amply
rewarded disclosing as it did that the
timepiece one of tho most beautiful in
Washington was a present from Bona
parto t Lafayette who gave it in turn
to Washington who determined that it
be handed down to bis successors in the
presidential office

WAsmsroTOX January 30 It is stated
with much positiveness that President
Davis of the senate favors the admission
of Dakota into the union and will vote
for the bill He holds it is said that the
southern portion of Dakota is entitled
by reason of population aud other con
coesiderations to admission and that
it is not a question for partisan con-
sideration Judge Davis vote com-
bined with tbe republicans would give
tho bill a majority iu the senate and as
the republicans control the bonse it
would appear the measure has a good
prospect of becoming a law during the
piesent session
