The opening nt Habers emporium
yesterday of his new spring stock was
an occasion of no little interest among
the throngs of ladies calling during the
day The proprietors wellknown taste
had put expectafiou at its highest and
though n matter of comparative indif-
ference to the ma culine mind few
things are either so enticing or so
thoroughly enjoyable to ladies as a first
exhibition of the new spring styles
The enjoyment of one after another
the various styles of silks and
satins lawns and other dress
goods with their new de-
signs was something certainly beyond
the reporters powers of description if
not indeed altogether mcompiehensj
ble to us of coarser mould Meu are
rarely much impressed with the beauty
of dry goods till seen in graceful out-
line upon a lady Moromsthetic iu gen-
eral the fair sex is especially so with
reference to those nice distinctions
which make the difference betweon
shoddy and really fine goods The la-
dies were in ecstucies here consequently
for of all things Mr Haber most disdains
shoddy in goods or false pretense in
anything Certain new styles branded
Aesthetic and illtistratiugsupposably
Oscar Wildes idea of taste were especi-
ally admired but whero all were so
beautiful the Indies themselves eemed
scarcely able to decide which they
liked best The exhibition continues
with new arrivals every day

MX JUSTICE COURTS
Tlie PopoWarncr Case Before
XXquirc Davis and JSelf Tlor
risi and Anion Smith In
Jusiice Evan Court
Our last issu contained a reference
to the trial of Pleas Warner and Joo
Pope for the alleged robbery of Free-
man ns far as the case had progressed
Yesterday Justice Davis resumed hear-
ing of the case and some conflicting tes-
timony wns inf roduced the weight of it
however being so much against the de-
fendants that the court felt it his duty to
ask them to make a bond of 400 each
to answer at the next term of
district court should the grand jury see
fit to find au indictment ngainst them
Failing to give bond they were con-
veyed to jail and will no doubt be
guests of the county until sent to
Huntsvillo or roleased as the ens e
inny be
In Justice Evans court the examin-
ing trial of Self nnd Morris for the al-
leged robbery was resumed Several
witnesses gave testimony pro and con
and the greater portion of the day wns
cousumod iu the monotony of hearing
testimony which was finally relieved by
the attempts of the attorneys om side
claiming maiden innocence and
the other concentrated guilt
The court held the accused under 500
bond each to await the action of the
grand jury aud being unable to come
foi ward with acceptable paper thoy
were confided to the keeping of Jailor
McGho
The case of the state vs Amou Smith
for assault with intent to murder is
now on trial before Justice Evans and
last evening a largo crowd comp Bed of
citizens aud persons from theOanett
Mills neighborhood were in tho court-
room to hear tho evidence Mr P Gal
lagher occupied the stand for nn hour
or more and detailed from his stand-
point the fight between Amon Smith aud
himself trevious to the morning of tho
fight and shooting nt the storo and also
patticulurs of tho oncounter betweon
himself and Whit Smith on the morning
of the shooting together with what fol-
lowed subsequently Theso statements
have been given sub taiitinlly in our
columns heretofore nnd it will not bo
necessary to ro > eat them as news mat-
ter As to their truth and what bearing
they may have iu discovering the guilt
or iunoceusoof Smith it is not our prov-
ince to say Whilo on tho stand uud
being closely crossquestioned by coun-
sel Mr Gallagher aiforted those present
much nmus mont by his genuine Irish
wit and rowirteoand his placid manner
under cross examination was remarkable
In one part of tho testimony when close-
ly questioned as to how he know Smith
was in a certain positiou hardly possible
to bo snen under certain circumstances
ho remarked well now sir yon know I
am crosseyed and can see a henp of
ways Had it been in a theater tho
house would hnvo been convulsed with
laughter and as it was Van Hall had to
call order in court Night coining on
hearing of finthor testimony was post
