dispatch was wired from Dallas to the

to it at the time expecting a different
version next day The Statesman has
taken the trouble to investigate the mat-
ter and no doubt speaks with confidence
Tho owner of the house in which Jesse
James was killed has tiled a most singu-
lar claim against the Mate with the gov-
ernor asking for 82G00 She is a widow
woman named Henrietta Salamau and
she represents that her house was worth
33000 before the state by its agents
killed one Jesse James therein that the
said Jesse James bem a notorious per-
son morbid curiosityseekers in the de-
sire to secure memeutoes of him have
wrecked and earned off the greater pait
of her house so that today she could
not sell the place for more than 51000
Being damaged by the act of the states
agents she comes to the state for reim
bursement
The decision of the state credit and
repudiating democratic committees in
Tennessee to unite in a call for a joint
convention does not insure the union of
the party in the coming campaign A
dispatch to the CouriorJourual of
Louisville says that the repudiators will
certainly bolt unless they are allowed
to control the state convention They
will insist upon putting into the plat-
form a repudiating plank to which tho
state credit wing will be unable to con-
sent without going back upon all their
professions If the30 statements are
authontic tho two democratic factious
will be fouud as wide apart as ever in
the canvass soon to open
A KENTUCKY EPISODE
The democratic central committee of
the state of Kentucky has just com-
pleted an investigation that appears to
have excited almost as much interest
throughout the commonwealth as
they call it in Kentucky as did the trial
of Butord for killing Judge Ediott
certainly a great deal more than the
Guiteau trial One
Captain Henry a
rural democrat but a very strong one
is the democratic nominecfor clerk of
tho Kentucky court of appeals a fat
office ihat is voted on by all the electors
of tho state Capt Henry came Louis-
ville electioneering and city blandish-
ments led him astray He looked upon
the ardent and became forgetful Then
the wicked Commercial of Louisville
charged Capt Henry with doing all
sorts of silly things while under the in-
fluence of tho winecup Kentuckiaus
especially the democrats were aroused
and sprang to arms in behalt of their
party nomjnee The papers took it up
one after another and lor weeks it has
been tho theme receiving a larger share
of attention than did Gov Eoberts
book or tho threecentsamile bill here-
in Texas Capt Henry and his friends
indignantly demanded an investiga-
tion and so the state democratic
committee was convened at Louis-
ville to sit in solemn tribunal on
Capt Henrys case After days of earn-
est investigation the committee decide
that while Capt Henry might have been
a little tight yet ho merits the support
of the party and advises all good demo-
crats to vote for him first last and all
the time The CourierJournal which
has championed Capt Henrys cause as
earnestly as it did TildenV rejoices over
the fiudiug of the committee and says
in a doubleleaded leader The truth
and the whole tnib is that Capt
Henry came to Louisville on an elec-
tioneering expedition that he was un-
attended by any friend or friends
that he fell into bad conipa
ny and dispensing the mis
cellaneous hospitalities of a candi
dale he yielded to temptation and for
a time lost possession of himself The
CourierJournal adds Capt Henry has
done nothing to foifeit his claim to tho
support of Kentucky democrats and
winds up with the clincher let him who
is guiltess cast the first stone There
is peace in Kontueky now and if Capt
Henry lives he is sure to be reelected
by the usual democratic majority next
xVugust The whole affair is amusing to
people at a distance but it shoot Ken-
tucky to the base The popular feeling
seemel to be voiced by a Lexington pa
por which said things havo come to a
pretty pass in Kentucky if a gentleman
cannot take a nip of Bourbon once in
seven years without having Hail Co-
lumbia raised about it An unbiassed
public will agree with the Lexington pa-

THE LYNCHOHALMERS CASE
The LynchChalmers debate in the
houe of representatives yesterday and
tho day before appears to have drawn
out the worst partizan passions on both
sides of the house and the matter cul-
minating as it doubtless will today in
the unseating of Chalmers will be the
bitterest episode of the sessiuu It is
perhaps better for the whole country
that the matter should be settled now
for Chalmers entire career in congress
has been fruitful of criticism on national
as well as local democracy He repre-
sents what is known as tho Shoe-
String district of Mississippi
and has represented it for nearly
six years If the reader will
take a map of Mississippi and find the
counties of Adams Bolivar Claiborne
Coahoma Issaquena Jefferson Quit
man Sharkey Tunic i Warren Wash-
ington and W ilkinson which comprise
the district he will appreciate the no-
menclature of shoestring applied to
it and now famous tho country over
The republicans have always claimed
that it was so shaped to secure demo-
cratic victories and the usual complaints
have also been made of the use of tissue
ballots shotguns etc iu carrying it for
tho democrats John E Lynch tho con-
testant is a colored man of more than
ordinary ability He claims that with a
fair ballot and honest count he would
have beat Chalmers several thousand
votes Gen Chalmers is well known
through his war record as a Confeder-
ate and his subsequent career in con-
gress He is a son ot Hon Joseph
Chalmers formerly United States sena-
tor from Mississippi He does not ap-
pear to be as popular in Mississippi as
he might be for the legislature just ad-
journed deliberately gerrymandered hib
district as to make his reelection prac-
tically impossible Gen Chalmers is
very indignant at this and introduced
a bill in congress on the subject of
congresoional appoitionmeut which is
a plain and severe rebuke of the legisla-
ture of his own state His retirement
ill probably end his public career in
Mississippi Lynch will enjoy his victo-
ry but a brief while as his time will ex-
pire in March of next yoar but he will of
course dniw full pay for the entire term
as ell as the expenses of conducting his
contest He will also enjoy the distinc-
tion of being the only negro in the con
gress of the United States
The six Chinese companies of San
Francisco have cunningly bought n
ranch on Pugeta Sound whore thoy
will laud coolies from China and bring
them into the United states as called
for Three thousand coolies are now on
their way to the Victoria ranch What
e < rer the Chinese treaty may say about
keeping Chinamen out it is to be feared
that the six companies will evade it by
bringing all the Mongolians they want
through Mexico and British Columbia
This is called au off year in politics
and yet a full house of representatives is
to bo elected and state legislatures
that will select twenty United States sen
ators are to be chosen Besides the
election of legislators and representa-
tives twenty states will choose gover
nors The year 1SS2 cannot therefore
be considered an unimportant one in
politics
Members of the legislature should re-
member that no man has a vested right
to as many terms in congress as he may
happen to want The congressional
districts should bo shaped on broader
grounds than for the benefit of any poli-
tician be he big fish or small fry
On dit that if the legislature fails to
pass the appropiation and apportion-
ment bills the alcalde will
convene an-
other session iustauter

I Our Dallas special of yesterday has
Most certainly doun Marshal Rutsell
great injustice Investigation yesterday
proved the fact that he is still in W ash
ingtou city and being there it is ab-
surd to think that a warrant of arrest
for him was on its way to Texas when
he is personally on hand to answer any
charges which may be made against
him by the department ot justice
In fact we do not believe that any
charg s are thus pending against Mr
Kussell The investigations were made
some weekp go and since the return of
the detectives to Washington he has re-
mained the favorite for the position
These miserable reports put in circula-
tion by designing persons are to be re-
gretted The Statesmans telegraphic
correspondent at Dallas no doubt gave
reports as gathered from a source seem-
ingly reliable but we are prepared to re-
gard th > whole thing as fa se and simply
the work of some defamer It is re-
ported that the fight against Russell at
Washington is prosecuted by the Davis
wing of the republican paity in Texas
and we do expect when this report is
investigated that it will be fouud to
emanate from some one of this gang at
Dallas
