Pirates eye senior-laden Wildcat team
G-P gets Sinton right where they want them... in their den
II Friday night’s match-up with fto. 4 Gregory-Porttand and “Then are only three klda starting for them that arm not
No. 9 Sinton Is not the ’gams of the week’, then somebody’s
asleep at the wheel.
* Sinton and G-P version No. 3, new testament. Yep, it’s the
third game in a,row for an age old rivalry that has been
renewed. The two teams had not met since the early seven-
ties. In year 2002, that changed. Some say Sinton was lucky
to win in ‘02 at their place, some say G^P was lucky to win in
'03 here.
No matter what anyone says, G-P is loaded. Sinton is still
trying to identify just how good they are. The nod does to the
home town ‘Cats because they line-up with 19 seniors on both
sides of the ball, and nae a single one goes both ways.
Another tidbit of info is the fact that both teams had great
years in ‘03 with playoff runs. Sinton went three deep into the
playoffs, as did G-P, both in their respective classifications.
The Pirates were a Division I representative, while the ‘Cats
were in Division II of 4A, losing to Alamo Heights in the region
semi-final, 36-6. 7
It .will be a classic, Sinton’s offense (returning 10 of 11)
starters, against G-P’s stingy defense. Our best guess is that
anyone has a spare $4 in their pockets come Friday... this
showdown will be the ticket
It will be the wit of the venerable George Harris against
third-year head Jimmie Mitchell of the Pirates. Both schools
have a huge amount of tradition, and both have impeccable
coaching staffs.
“For me, this la fust another game on the schedule.” says
seniors... so they have the experience and they will be heavi-
ly favored" Mitchell said, “but they are In four A and there Is
a disparity In numbers to draw from. Their twelve hundred
kids versus our five hundred plus. They're supposed to have
the advantage and so the pressure will be on them. Just Ilka
the pressure was on me (us) last week against Taft," he
added.
Both Mitchell and Harris have the same number of years at
their respective helms, but Harris’ tenure as 4. head coach
began several years ago in Refugio, prior to returning to G-P
where he was the head track and field coaeh.
G-P and Corpus Christ! King opened this year’s local sea-
son on Thursday evening last week at Buc Stadium with the
‘Cats claiming a 28-6 win over the Mustangs.
Probably the biggest threat posed by the hosting Wildcats
is their intimidating ground game. And who better to repre-
sent that ground game that Division I prospect Connell Davis
at halfback. Davis, a 6’3” 210-lb. senior will be a real test for
the youthful Pirate defenders, who are attempting to rebuild
their defenses from last year’s graduation.
Davis rushed for 152 of the team’s total of 237 scoring two
TDs against the Mustangs, while Courtny Greer, the tailback,
accounted for 60 yards on 13 tries.
The ‘Cats, like the Pirates In the opener, didn’t show much
through the air hitting just two of eight passes for 20 yards
and one pick.
Offensively, beside Davis in the backfield, the Cats rely on
Mitchell... whose tenure does not relate to the grid wars of the
late 60s and early 70s. “I not saying I don't want to win this
thing... I'm saying they don’t want to lose it... because they are
not supposed to.... this game Is definitely not our ‘super
bowl’, although I know a lot of people around here would love
to beat G-P.
“They will have a game on their hands, and If we win or
lose, we’ll still learn from It and hopefully get better because
of It, ” the Sinton coach added. ,
“Its going to tea big dash, ” he said.
Jordon Anthony at QB. Anthony also houses senior experi-
ence and leadership and is an exceptional ball handler. The
offensive line is also extremely talented as well as capable. It
is all senior and averages 221-lbs. per man.
Defensively, although the Cats start three underclassmen,
both linebackers house senior leadership and are excellent.
Dillon Burdine, #31, Sr.-190lbs.; and Casey Allen, #40, Sr.-210-
Ibs. make the calls and are "... real good...’’ according to
Coach Jimmie Mitchell.
Gametime is 7:30 p.m. Friday. Wildcat Stadium.

Bucs blank G-P 12-0
The Freshmen used a pair of
touchdowns coming in the second
and fourth quarters and some
stingy defense, to ward off a
Freshman Kitten team in the season
opener for both squads.
Sinton prevailed 12-0 over the G-
P 9th grade second team.
i Trent Hesseltine was the main
cog in that he carried the load on
both TDs.
The opening quarter appeared
suspect for the locals as the Kittens
pretty much dominated play on
offense. However, after a short
drive comprised of two first downs,
the Bucs had their first chance at
the hall offensively.
However, Sinton could not get
anything rolling until the second
quarter. Anthony Trevino’s three
carries produced 34 yards. His

efforts set the stage for Trent
Hesseltine’s score from 51 yards out.,
The ensuing conversion attempt was
foiled leaving Sinton with a 6-0 lead
at intermission.
In the third quarter both defens-
es appeared to have the better of
play. Sinton held the Kittens to a
single first down in the last half.
Key defensive plays were turned
in by Randall Richter, Roger
Sarabia, Anthony Trevino, and
Robert Dunldp.
Early in the final stanza of play,
Trent Hesseltine. got another touch
inside the 10-yard line and made
the best of it.
Hesseltine scampered the final'
eight yards for a little insurance.
The conversion attempt failed.
Sinton hosts G-P again this
Thursday evening.
