Strolling Cattle
Last Sunday night a good citizen living near Wharton called
in and reported having a bull yearling missing from his pasture,
he was positive it was stolen, for it was In a very small pasture,
and It had never before run off from its mother, I went out that
nite, next morning we got an early start hunting what we were
positive was a stolen yearling, all Monday morning was spent
hunting the calf, then during the afternoon it leisurely came stroll-
ing home, it had been away on a visit, this time of year and a
little later on cattle, are going to be prone to stray, so folks it is
very wise for you to keep close tab on your cattle, they will roam.
Weaving Car
Last Saturday night Highway Patrol were out on usual patrol
way up ahead of them they saw an old model 37 Ford, it was
weaving back and forth along the highway, the patrol just knew
they had a drunk driver so they pulled up and stopped the car, one
go* out took his flash light and— - ■ -
threw it in the car and said good Cum of Richmond, less hours and
night where is the rest of you, an better pay, so again I am hunt-
elderly Negro replied we is all
here, there was four grown per-
sons In the front seat and five in
the back seat, the old fellows had
not had even one drink, he just
did not have elbow room.
Dead Baby
Monday afternoon Mr. Vick of
the Bus Station called for an of-
ficer and Chief Brown went there,
a Negro man from Fulshire had
come in on the Bus he had
brought a very young premature
baby, he had wrapped it in a
little blanket and he had been
sent here to one of the Wharton
clinics or hospitals, when he ar-
rived he got off the bus and the
baby was very still, he took a
good look and the little child
was dead.
ing a deputy sheriff. I have com-
piled a questionnaire that I am
asking each aspirant to fill in
and I intend to hold this vacancy
open for at least two weeks, I
hope that those interested in this
type of work will come and fill
in the application, and at the
end of two weeks I will ask the
member of the Commissioners
Court to check the applications
with me and advise me on the
choice made.
Security Threat
If some of you people haven’t
given it a thought then it is high
time you think and give serious
thought, this policing situation
is not good at all. This is a big
county, the population is great,
you have much valuable proper

Tuesday morning I took off: dear ones to think of: You look
for Paris, Arkansas, to get a man‘on your officers to protect your
wanted here, I planned on being
back during the afternoon, but
due to bad weather up ahead and
due to the fact the man was in
jail about 40 miles from the air-
port, I was unable to make the
triD in one day. However, early
the next morning we loaded up
and took off and in a little over
three hours was back in Whar-
ton on the job. Just think a little

Buck Needs Deputy Sheriffs
On this coming Tuesday M. V.
Crain will no longer be with the
Sheriff Department of Wharton
County. Mr. Crain has accepted
a position with Sherfif Rue Lince-
dear ones and the security of
your county. The daily papers
and the radio are telling you of
the threat to the security of
your land, they are telling you
that war in the very near future
is not impossible, of the many
Federal Government agencies,
the FBI was the only one that
did receive a great increase in
funds for 50 over 49, thp FBI was
allowed and encouraged to in-
crease in man power, why, that
is your problem to ponder on. I
realize you the people are too
busy with personal interest to
give too much thought and at-
tention to who your police are,
what they are or what they do.
But folks it is high time you

take a little time out to think
of the situation, give it a little
study and make it your business
to find out what your officers
are up against this day and
time. Most of you say well I
don’t need a sheriff or police
man, but stop and think, sup-
pose there was no sheriff or
policemen, then you would soon
find out, you not only need them
you must have them, I am beg-
ging for a deputy, I need a
good deputy very bad we are
going to pay the man every cent
the county finance Dads say we
can pay, but folks remember this
if you want good clean officeds
you must pay them, if you want
a good clean county then you
nrist have the of friers to keep it
clean with, if you know of a
good man that would make a
good deputy then send him to
me.
Speeding in School Zone
Friday afternoon I went to
Palacios and met with the Depu-
ty Sheriffs of Matagorda County,
we were working on another of
those big forgery team, on the
way back from Palacios I fell
in behind one of these long trail-
er trucks, I followed it right on
through Danevang, at the edge
of town there was a big sign
says School Zone, nearby was a
sign saying 30 MPH, the truck
was doing 50 MPH, through the
school zone and through town,
on the other side of the town I
pulled him in, I said fellow do
you know hew fast you were
driving, he said 45 I guess I said
no 50, I said did you know you
came through a school zone and
a town he said yes I guess I did.
I said you married and he said
yes, I said do you have children,
he said yes sir, I said I reckon
you can afford to pay $14.00 or
more fine for the privelege of
running through the school zone
and town. He said no sir, I can’t
afford it but looks like I might
have to. I said what do you think
of a fellow that will do just
what you did do, run through a
school zone where lots of little
children are playing, he said I
don’t think much of them, I said
I guess you make lots of money
driving this truck and can well
afford to pay these fines, and he
said look mister, I just wasn’t
thinking and I have never
thought about this for it has
never before been told to me like
you brought it out, I am a poor
man and 1 do have a family and
I love my family, if I pay a
fine that wife and kids will have
to suffer for the mistake I made,
I don’t have much and I don't
need much, but my family needs
every cent I can make, if you
fine me I’ll pay it and I’ll not
make the mistake again, if you
let me go this time 1 won’t ever
do that again, and you can say
one thing you are giving my
wife and kids a break. I did let
that man go. then I went on but
down the road out of sight I
waited, and as far as I watched
and trailed him. he u’as doing
just as he told me, holding it to
the right speed.
Smart Boys Caught
Early part of Saturday night,
a young Wharton man was en
route from El Campo to Wharton,
on way over three men in an old
model car run him off the road
once, little further on they drop-
ped behind, then in short order
here they came again and again
they cut in front of him, in
Wharton he reported the inci-
dent, the highway patrol were
between El Campo and Wharton
but took the call and took out
in hot pursuit, at Beasley the
smart boys were caught, they
had an old car suped up, they

denied doing anything wrong,
but King and Henderson at
Louise reported they had stop-
ped the same car there and giv-
en it a warning, the boys them-
selves said they had been stopped
at Wharton, now they were
caught again, one had altered
registration card, another had
altered drivers license, they said
that was done so they could
show them and buy beer, they
were under age. the third one he
didn’t have anything, just a
little bit drunk he was in the
back seat. Of recent date all over
the State there has been an epi-
demic of people old and young
trying to outrun the police cars.
Up near Gonzales just several
days ago, two men out running
state police, sideswiped a truck
and killed themselves, police car
in trying to stop hit the ditch
and ran over man that had
Jumped from the truck and killed
him, the patrolmen were slight-
ly injured. Near Houston we have
heard any number of radio broad
casts of cars racing ahead of
police and then other police cars
ordered out to intercept the
speeders, at Louise the other
night a car did the same thing,
run first one dirt road then an-
other and finally got a tire shot
off, in Wharton Friday nite some
young boys did out run the city
patrol car, but later were caught.
Not Funny
It may be funny to those folks
attempting to out run the offi-
cers, but folks to the officers it
is anything but funny, those of-
ficers are out there only to save
lives and keep down wrecks, they
are trying to keep you from
wrecking and killing each other
and every time we get into a
chase with you, we are pretty
near going to catch you one way
or another, we have you at a dis-
advantage, we have red lights
and siren'-- wo-have radius,11 you
should out run us, still we most
generally get your license num-
ber and in the end you loose, it
is very dangerous business and
to the officers it surely isn’t fun-
ny. What if some of you folks do
out run a police car what have
you done, you sure have not put
a feather in your cap, it hasn’t
gained you a single solitary
thing, gnd certainly you have
done nothing that you could pos-
sibly be proud of, all in the
world you could call It, would be
wanton law violation that you
got by with for a time being only.
And for the benefit of you the
young folks if you think It is
funny or if you think you are
making a reputation, then you
are wrong you are making a rep-
utation all right and surely it is
not a good one, you may think
the older folks don’t know what
you are doing and you may think
you are getting by with this or
that you you are strictly not,
people see and know and there is
very little you get by with, and
you are surely not smart because
you drive at a break neck speed
and it surely is not something
funny to laugh at.
Makes Hit With Girls
Unless some of you look at it
like this Friday night Crain was
slowly cruising along, up ahead
he saw a young Negro boy stag-
gering along all over the side-
walk, he had a half gallon jug
of wine in his hands, just before
he got up even and to a group
of young colored people he stop-
ped and raised up on that half
gallon jug, he just got it to his
lips and Crain grabbed him and
it, there was just a little red
wine in the jug and he put the
boy in the car, the boy immedi-
ately said Mr. Law I is not drunk
I ain’t even drunk none of that
stuff yet, I is a stranger in town
and dat makes a hit with the
girls, sure enough that boy was
not drunk he was just acting
drunk he thought it was funny
and he thought he was making
a hit with the girls. He was al-
lowed to proceed on to Houston
were ire was headed in the first
place. .

For the benefit of you merch-
ants and store owners, be on the
alert for bogus rubber stamp
checks on the City National Bank
pf Houston, they have Joe D.
Hughes stamped over where the
signature of the signer is, they
are reported being cashed by a
young woman about 26 to 27
about 5* 2’’ weight about 110,
.some say dark blonde and she is
(said to be pregnant, those checks

concern is a reputable concern
but these rubber stamped checks
.are certainly not issued by Joe
D. Hughes, they are all filled in
by pen and it is a blue black ink.
