Roping Festival
There will be “big doings’’ at
the Bandera County Recreation
Center on October 8-9, when the
Forty Year Olds and Over,
gather to try their skills at calf
roping and team roping. This
popular event among the older
ropers is held annually and
contestants may enter as many
times as they wish
The roping starts at 12 noon
Saturday In the calf roping
event there will be a four calf
average and in the team roping
a four steer average
The entry office at the arena •
will be open Saturday morning
until 11 a m October 8
Buckles will be given winners
of each event.
Roger Dale Byrd was born
August 21, 1959 in San Antonio
and died October 1, 1977. He had
lived here in Bandera for about
five years. He is the son of
Samuel T Byrd and Adelle
Primm Byrd of New Wharton’s
Dock Besides his parents, he is
survived by two brothers,
Charles (Buddy) Byrd of
Bandera and Ritch W. Simmons
of Honolulu, Hawaii; seven
sisters, Mrs. Jet (Dorothy)
Smith of Boerne, Mrs Frank
(Betty) Taylor of Spring
Branch, Mrs Kenneth (Mary)
Boehme of San Antonio, Mrs.
Grady (Rose) Desmuke of
Center Point, Mrs. Dennis
(Joyce) Reininger of New
Braunfels, Miss Ida Byrd and
Miss Joan Irene Byrd of Ban-
dera, and grandmothers, Mrs.
Ella Byrd of Bandera aod Mrs
Cora Sanders of Danville, Ark.
Funeral services for young
Byrd were held Tuesday, Oc-
tober 4 at 2 p.m from Plummer
Funeral Chapel with Rev.
Richard Porche, Baptist pastor
of Center Point officiating. He
was laid to rest in the Bandera
Cemetery
Casket carriers were Tommy
Nugent, David Nugent, Morris
Allen (Bubba) Cherry, Tommy
Cavin, Darrell Cavin, Eric
Seaman, Timmy Cavin and
Nevelle Banks.

John James He was not able to
attend the meeting because of
illness and his wife, Elizabeth,
accepted on his behalf. Roland
Britsch was also presented a
plaque for his hard work and 18
years of service on the Board by
Cotton Fitzgerald. Their wives,
Elizabeth James and Ella
Britsch, were also recognized
and presented a red rose by
Virginia Strieker
Nomination of new board
members were made by Clif-
ford Flach The members voted
in Rudolph Schott and Alton
Reininger to replace outgoing
directors Stanley Tschirhart
and G W. Ender.
President Langford ad-
journed the meeting and
everyone was invited to attend
the dance following The dance
was put on by the Insurance
and Tire Service Dept , Sue Holt
and The Bandera Ranch Store.

Field Day
Set At Utopia
The annual Wildlife Field Day
sponsored by the Extension
Service and the Soil Con-
servation Service will be held
Saturday, October 8, starting at
10a.m. at the O.A Fisher Camp
on the Sabinal River at Utopia.
There will be a range and
pasture tour and everyone is
invited to attend.
The program will feature
speakers from both the Ex-
tension Service and the Soil
Conservation Service speaking
on Wildlife Management
during the drought and
management of lakes for both
recreation and fish. Mr Millard
Schuhart will speak for the Soil
Conservation Service and Dr.
Milo J Shult, Area Wildlife
Specialist, and Werner M.
Lindig will be the speakers for
the Extension Service.
A barbecue lunch will be
served at 12 noon at the O.A.
Fisher Camp for a nominal fee.
Mr. Vernon Porter of Utopia is
making arrangements for the
meal. This is going to be an
informal but educational Field
Day. There will be subject
matter discussed which you can
dpply to your own program. The
only way to find out what will
apply to your wildlife program
is to attend. Hope to see you
there.
Bandera Burial
For Mrs. Anne Walsh
Many friends here offer
sympathy to Mrs. Evelyn
Tingleff Carabin at the death of
her beloved daughter, Mrs.
Anne Carabin Walsh, who died
Friday, September 30, 1977 at
the age of 45 years, in San
Antonio.
Mrs. Walsh was a member of
St. Matthew Catholic Church,
the San Antonio Bar Association
and the American Association
of Nurse Anesthetists.
Her survivors include
daughters, Miss Stephanie Anne
Walsh, Deborah Ingle Walsh,
Patricia Cecilie Walsh; sons, A teen-aged parolee from a
Sean Eamon Walsh, all of San burglary conviction was jailed

evening at 7:30 pm at St
Matthews Catholic Church in
San Antonio.
One young man, Roger Dale Byrd, age 18, was killed instantly and Bill Hickman, age 21, and Todd

Thomas J. Conaway, age 69 of
Lakehills, Texas, died .Sunday
in the Medina County Memorial
Hospital at Hondo. Mr
Conaway was bom January 4,
1908 in San Antonio and was a
professional photographer

He is survived by his wife,

the dogs with a lead of 44-0,
which later led to an in-
