Mary Merket
returns to college
From The
County
Wells
Coming to college for the first
time or after many years absence
from studying can be a jolting
experience. Yet many women in
the New Mexico Junior College
Service Area made this brave step
this summer.
Among this number are Earlene
Peoples of Hobbs and Mary
Merket of Seminole.
Mary is married and has four
children, ages, 17, 15, 12 and 7.
Her husband is manager of the
Seminole Coop Gin. She has
worked for her husband for two
years as bookkeeper at the gin
and has worked through her job
with an auditor out of Abilene,
who encouraged her to study
accounting.
With the help and encourage-
ment of her husband and children,
she decided to launch out this
summer. Her son teases her that
he will not help her with her
algebra.
Mary’s problems are common
to most returning students. She
must learn to coordinate her
school work with her family
responsibilities.
For Mary, the problem is
relatively easy. Her daughters,
ages 17 and 12, are active in 4-H
and know well now to cook and
manage a household.
Another problem Mary had was
fear of algebra. Many students
who have been away from college
for some time are afraid of math.
Mary decided she will approach
her study of algebra as she would
a new job and so far she’s making
her grades just fine.
Mary has found that her
greatest asset in returning to
school is the encouragement and
excitement of her husband and
children in "keeping mom in
school.”
Other women will be encourag-
ed by the example Mary and
Earlene have set and will make
the big decision for this fall at
New Mexico Junior College.
Trained counselors are on duty
from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday
through Thursday and on Friday
from 8 a m. to 3 p.m They are
ready to pre-enroll students for
the fall semesters and will answer
any questions.
