H. D. CLUB HAS FIRST
MEETING OF THE YEAR
The H. D. Club began its new
year with a picnic for families of
members on Wednesday night at
the state park grounds.
Mrs. Y. C. Happner, club pres-
ident, was in charge of arrange-
ments. About 35 persons were
present for the supper which was
brought basket style by club
members. The menu includeu
fried chicken, baked ham, pork
sausages, salads, vegetable dishes
frijoles, pies, cakes, pickels, and
iced tea.
LAST RITES HELD FOR
HOMER COYLE
Funeral services were held In
Mathis Sunday afternoon at 4
o’clock for Homer Coyle, 72, who
died Saturday in the Convales-
cents’ Home at Corpus Christi
after a long illness.
Services were conducted at the
Dobie Funeral Home and burial
was in McNabb Memorial Ceme-
tery. The Rev. Vernie S. Pipes,
the Rev. W. S. Highsmith, the
| Rev. Edwin W. Gorom and John,
j L. Norris conducted the services.

GOROM OBSERVES
ANNIVERSARY
The first anniversary of the
ordination of Edwin W. Gorom
to the Christian Ministry was ob-
served in an impressive service
in First Christian church, Sun-
ay evening, September 5.
Elder Rollo L. Coffin presided
in the aniversary service, and
Rev. Gorom repeated the Vows
of Orination which he took when
he was ordained here September
7, 1947. Sermon subject was
“The Foolishness of Preaching.’’
A beautiful floral arrangement
in the baptistery window was
given by the Woman’s Auxiliary
in honor of the occasion.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Pinkston
of Houston and friends, Mr. anci
Mrs. L. D. Sutherland were holi-
day guests of Mr. and Mrs. F. B.
Hickman.
STUDY CLUB MEETS
AT HOME OF PRESIDENT
The Mathis Study Club opened
the new year Wednesday with a
program and called business
meeting at the home of the pres-
ident, Mrs. H. W. Tobin.
The club voted to take part
in the playground program after
hearing a talk on the subject by
D. C. Brown, Rotary president,

be used for upkeep on the two
proposed playgrounds, on the
