suffered a 53-51 defeat to the
„ Tigers on a last-second shot.
The game-winner capped a
come-back for the Tigers, who
erased a 43-39 Seminole lead
entering the fourth quarter. The
Indians had amassed 16 points in
the third quarter, double their
point production in the final
; quarter, to take a four-point
. advantage entering the telling
• fourth period.
The loss dropped the Indians,
who reeled off a 13-game winning
streak to begin the year, to a 14-2
; overall and 1-1 district mark. The
Tigers improved their overall
mark to 5-10 and evened their
league mark at 1-1. W
The loss spoiled a stellar
shooting and rebounding effort
for the Indians, who are ranked
No. 4 among state Class AAA
schools in the latest rankings
provided by the Texas
Basketball Coaches Association.
Seminole made 22 of 43 shots
during the game, for 51 per cent,
and recorded 40 rebounds,
1 ‘ including 26 defensive caroms.
Hottest of Seminole’s snipers
was junior Randy Jones, good on
11 of 15 field goal attempts for 73
per cent. The field goals gave
!- Jones 22 points, for high-game
honors among the Indians.
Postman Terry Bailey was
four of seven from the field
against the Tigers and made two
of three shots from the line for 10
points and Rusty Robinson
matched three field goals and
three free throws for nine points.
John Johnson, two of three
from the field, had four points
and Kirby Brooks, two of. two
from the line, Herbie Rios, one of
two from the field and Brad
James totaled two points each.
Bailey took his usual spot as
top rebounder for the Indians,
taking down 15 caroms, including
nine off the defensive boards.
Rusty Robinson pulled down
^ 5, Junes collected
six boards and James and
Brooks gathered two boards
apiece. Johnson and Victor
Cuevas had two rebounds each
and Rios garnered one.
The Indians recorded 23 steals
during the contest, with Brad
James leading the effort with
seven thefts. Bailey had five
steals, Jones had four, Rios stole
the ball three times, Johnson
collected two and Brooks and
Robinson had one steal eaeh.
Jones led the Indians with nine
assists and James had eight of
the squad’s 25 assist total. Rios
and Robinson had three assists
each and Bailey registered two.
The Indians host Roosevelt in
their next action, with the contest
beginning at 8 p.m. Friday.

The winners, now 7-1 on the
season, sprang to a quick 15-8
lead after the first quarter and
steadily increased their
advantage throughout the rest of
the contest, leading by 10 at the
half and by 16 points at the end
of three quarters before winning
by the eventual 21-point margin.
Chet Byerly, with 11 points,
and Jim shepherd, with 10, paced
the winners, with Hector Cuevas
adding six. Juan Lopez scored
four, Ricky Briseno and Thomas
De Los Santos had three apiece
and Mike Diaz, Marsh Day,
Jesse Valdez, Julian Alcala and
Bryan Baty contributed two
points each.
Byerly headed the locals in
rebounding, pulling down 10
boards. Hector Cuevas had five
rebounds, Lopez and Shepherd
gathered four boards each and
Diaz and Day added three
apiece. Alcala and De los Santos
had two caroms each. Briseno
led the locals with four steals and
Trelane Thomas added three
Lopez, Cuevas and Byerly had
two thefts^ each and Valdez added
one.

The Seminole eighth-grade
basketball team, unbeaten in six
starts in the 1984 portion of their
schedule, found things a bit
rougher in ’85, losing their first
game of the year to Andrews 37-
19 in a Friday contest in
Andrews.
Seminole amassed the
majority of its points in the third
quarter, 10, but Andrews had
already placed the game out of
reach at the point, leading 18-5
going into the period and by 30-
15, after the quarter.
Chet Byerly led the locals with
eight points, on four-of-seven
shooting from the field. Juan
Lopez, one of two from the field
and the free throw line, had three
points. Jim Shepherd and £>hawn
Ragsdale had two points apiece.

Mr. and Mrs. Stan Hughes of
Seminole are the parents .of a
daughter, Katie Layne, born Jan.
2 at 7:24 ,p.m. in Lubbock
Methodist Hospital. She weighed
7 lbs. 3 oz. and was 21V2 inches
long. She has one older sister,
Kallie, 16 months old.
Grandparents are Mr- and Mrs.
N.W. Hughes and Mr. and Mrs.
Karl Don Hughes, . all of
Seminole. .
Eighth grade wins over Frenship
The Seminole eighth grade
girls’ basketball team resumed
play after a lengthy holiday lay-
off and picked up where they left
off before the holidays with a 36-
29 win over Frenship.
Although Seminole led at the
end of every quarter, coach Gay
Lavender said “Every time we
started to pull away from them,
they kept coming back and they
cut our lead to just one point Gandy followed with 12. Mary
several times.” Helen Garcia added four, while
Lavender also singled out Shea Julie Collett, Allison Scott, and

The eighth held an 11-3 lead at
the end of the first quarter, and a
20-14 lead at the half. At the end
of the third quarter, it was 29-22.
Dedra Brooks led Seminole
scorers with 13, while Kara Beth
Shea Foote all contributed two
each and Jill Jameson chipped
in with one.
The eighth grade, now 10-1 for
the season, will host Roosevelt
next' Monday in a game
beginning at 6:30 p.m.
