Y EMIL GERLICH.
The subject of this 'sketch, Emil
Gerlich, was born December 29, 1875,
and is now over 21 years of age. He
has been collecting postage stamps
since 1891, and has a general collection
of about 4000 varieties. He has been
dealing in postage stamps since Feb-
ruary, 1896, when he and Robt. Kess-
ler formed a partnership under the
firm name of Gerlich & Kessler. They
have built up a large and growing bus-
iness and are deservedly popular.
At the San Antonio conventions I
had the pleasure of meeting him per-
sonally for the first time, and he im-
pressed me very forcibly with his deep
thinking and earnest manner. Emil
is one of the best young men that ever
opened a stamp album or licked a
hinge. He is smart-using the word
in its best sense-and the high opinion
gained through correspondence was
strengthened at San Antonio.
Mr. Gerlich is Treasurer of the Tex-
as Philatelic Association and one of
the S. P. A. Trustees. He is also a
member of the P. S. of A. and C. P. S.

Association. He commenced collect-
ing in 1888, sold his collection in 1894,
and resumed collecting in 1895. In
1896 he formed a partnership with Jos.
A. Mueller, under the firm name of
the Alamo Stamp Co. He bought Mr.
Mueller out in March, and is now sole
proprietor, and is assisted in the bus-
iness by Julius Jermy. His last col-
lection numbered over 8000 varieties.
This was placed in his stock. He
makes a specialty of collecting Mex-
ican Revenues, counterfeits and entire
postal cards, being a charter member
of the Postal Card Society of America.
He made two trips through the states
in '92 and '93, visiting Baltimore, Chi-
cago, Cincinnati, Mobile, Nashville,
New Orleans. New York, Philadelphia,
St. Louis, Washington, etc. He was
married in 1895 to a beautiful Spanish-
Italian lady of San Antonio, and they
now have a pretty boy 14 months old.
Besides the stamp business, be is an
accountant, and interested in the
wholesale hardware business. Was
founder of the old A. C. P. S., also of
the M. P. C. of S. A. Was chairman
of the first International Philatelie Ex-
hibition held in America. which was
witnessed by over 600 people in one
day. He was one of the organizers of
the T. P. A. and is present Secretary.

tory and aerial navigation, he has been

Society and Treasurer of the Aerial

rector of the Mexican Casino. He
compiled the Texas Philatelic Direc-
tory in 1895. His portrait, which ap-
peared in our November issue was
made from an old photograph taken
in the summer of 1892.
