“HOBBY’S FICTIONARY”
OF OIL TERMS AND PHRASES
By JEANETTE HOBBY
Reprinted from the OIL DIGEST
Compiled for the use end benefit
of nil those who want to make a
million (chuckle) in the oil bu*i-
neaa, but who need the right vo-
tnbulary. When you have finished
reading this compilation you will
M
know less thun nothing about the
whole thing, so read it nt yom

Lint of Mont Commonly Used
Oil Terms and Phrases
(There are others, but they’re
too common to print)
OIL MAN: Any reasonably intelli-
gent guy with a gift of gab, a
castiron stomach and the hide of
an elephant, who can scrape to-
gether a car, a map, a pair of
boots and a gal to share his bunk.
On second thought, the intelligence
isn’t important if he has a heck
of a lot of luck.
OIL WEED: That stuff that grows
about ten feet off of any old coun-
try road{ which..vou have to get
out and hunt every few hours when
you’re on an all day leafing spree
—especially if you’ve got your
girl along.
GEOLOGIST. These are the *uy«
in the business who know all the
answers, they wish. Now and then
put* his money where
AT . - ■ >»-
he puts his money where his
mouth is and then it’s safe to put
in your own two cei.ta. This specie
of oil man may use a lot of ten-
dollar wards he learned in a text-
book, but don’t let that scare you.
He’s tame, and every now and then
he’s right
SITTING ON A WELL: Practi-
cally the same thing as sitting bn
an active volcano. An excellent
way to reduce by sweating it out.
Also provides a good alibi for mar-
ked men who want a night out.
CHILI: That stuff you eat for
breakfast, dinner and supper when
you're trying to make the grade
and break into the oil game, but
which you would rather Ire caught
dead than caught eating after
you’ve made your first million.
SANDi-ThlfninT what you get be-
tween your toes at the seashore,
not by a long sight. Sometimes,
though, you get it right between
the eyes. It’s that stuff where oil
ought to ’be and often ain't.
SAND-COKING THE: This is
what every oil man has to Ire
present when they do. He wouldn’t
even trust his own grandmother to
tell him the truth about this. Space
does not permit . a detailed dis-
cussion of the various oil sand
formations here. However, anyone
really.< interested in pursuing the
subject can go to the nearest play-
ground and study the sand in the
kiddies’ sandboxes. He will pro-
bably learn just as much a whole
lot cheaper. *
COKE HOUSE: Go slow and grin
when you say this, bub, and don’t
say it at all when you’ve just been
to the dentist. It’s that sacred
place where no gentleman would
even dream of going without an
invitation. There have been in-*
stances of eager beavers slipping
in for a looksee, hut this is strict-
ly against the ethics of the oil
fraternity, to sav nothing of l»e-
ing downright dangerous to life
and limb.
SLUSH PIT: A seething hole of
mud and water originally provided
for convenience In committing aui-

SHADING IN: This has nothing
to do with potatoes. It merely
designates the beginning of that
period of anxiety and suffering all
oil men go through until the well

If the well produces you are strict-
ly in the potatoes, though.

SHOOTING CREW: Nope,
I:\rmers-Fi rstVational Rank
this is
not the sporting end of the busi-
ness. It consists of a truck load
of guys with a lot of gadgets, who
go around tying up trees and tele-
phone poles with red and green
ribbons when It ain’t even Christ-
mas.
SCOUT: This kind of scout can’t
build a fire by rubbing two sticks
together. He’s just a guy who
“lays” out On a well for a big
company for days at a time, eats
chili and turns in an expense ac-
count for a steak; then comes in
and gets his dope from another guy
—anrlgets paid for doing it.
ASSIGNOR: A guy who thinks
he’s unloading on the other fellow

ASSIGNEE: A guy who thinks
he’s put over a fast one on the
assignor.
PRODUCING ROYALTY: Brother
when you get this for you're struck
pay-dirt.
LEASE BROKER: A guy who’s
broker than you are, but is trying
to remedy same at your expense.
PROMOTER: Strictly speaking,
this specie sticks to promoting the
drilling of ail wells, but take it
from one who knows, sister, all
oil men are promoters at heart;
if they can’t promote one thing
they’ll try another, especially if
she’s a blonde.
CHRISTMAS TREE: When the
Christmas Tree is rigged up, bro-
ther, Santa Clou* has really
caught up with you if you have an
interest in the well.
SCHLUMBERGER: The fevei
chart of an oil well. You run a
temperature if you don’t see it,
and you run a fever if you do;
allee samee either way.
SQUEEZING; or SQUEEZE JOB:
If you don’t know what this term
means you ain't no oil man; in
fact, if you don’t know this one
you ain’t no man!

Most of the oil you are using today was found more chan
ten years ago. It takes about that long to explore and develop
potential resources to their full, efficient capacity.
First, you have to find the oil. Geologists and geophysicists spend
months of scientific study before they pronounce an area a "prospect.”^
It takes more months to drill exploratory wells; and if they find oil,
it takes years to drill the other wells that define the field, establish
the amount of oil in it, and bring it into full production.
Today, this year, continuously, we must develop the oil resources
we may need — without notice — on some future tomorrow.1
In spite of minor fluctuations in demand, the need for oil has
increased steadily over the years; and every now and again,1
there is a sudden, heavy, unexpected need for additional ^
supplies, like the demand for fuel oil on the Eastern seaboard
during the cold Winter of 1947-48. Furthermore, we must face
the fact that in this atomic era, in this day of the jet airplane and
the long-range submarine, the Ui S. oil industry muse prepare
now to meet the necds-of any future national emergency.
That’s why the American oil industry is undertaking the heavy
, costs of exploring the Tidelands of the continental shelf in
order to bring the oil fields that geologists think are there
into full production now. Rest assured that the oil will not
be wasted; on the contrary, it will be ready for instant use
when you and the nation need it.
