Roman Honored At Reception
The Mathis Police Department
honored Enrique Roman with a
reception at the Municipal Cour-
troom Friday.
Roman, who was the police
department’s investigator, is resign-
ing his post to join the Texas Depart-
ment of Public Safety, where he will
undergo extensive training at the
D.P.S. Academy in Austin for 18
weeks.
The reception was hosted by Elena
and Yolanda Gonzales,
^miests were treated to sandwiches,
chips, dip, a large chocolate chip
' cookie, and a cake in the shape of a
highway department patrol car,
baked by “Cakes by Gerri” of
Mathis.
Among special guests were D.P.S.
Troopers John Galvan, Lambert
Cantu, Jerry Byrd, D.P.S. Sergeant
Frank Hall, Roman’s wife Rosie,
and his daughter Bonnie.
During the reception, Mathis
Police Chief Israel Garcia gave a
short speech thanking Enrique for
his dedication and devotion to the
Mathis Police Department, stating
that he “had been a great asset to
the department” and that “his ac-
complishments would reflect great-
ly on the City of Mathis.”
Alaska Presentation Given To Club
“Go Forth to Alaska for an Ex-
citing Adventure” was the theme of
a slide presentation and lecture
given by Mrs. Olan McCraw, Jr. in a
meeting of the Mathis Study Club
Wednesday, Jan. 2, in her home.
Mrs. McCraw congratulated pro-
gram chairman Mrs. Gus Mengers
for an excellent timing for such a
program on Alaska because on that
day Mathis was experiencing the
coldest day of the winter season so
{^■Towever, it was quiet comfortable
^mside watching slides of icebergs,
glaciers, and snow from
photography taken by Mrs. McCraw
on two visits to Alaska. The lecture
was very informative and educa-
tional and caused members to ex-
press a desire to go there, but in the
summer time.
President Mrs. Marvel King con-
ducted the business meeting with
various reports being given.
Refreshments of ginger bread
squares, seasoned oyster crackers,
coffee and hot spiced cider tea were
served to 13 members and two
guests, Miss Marguerite Jeffress
and Mrs. Pauline Henderson.
Sharing duties with Mrs. McCraw
were Mrs. Marvel King, Mrs. D.S.
Jackson and Mrs. Walter Leber, Sr.
Local
Mr. and Mrs. Albert L. Syma
celebrated Christmas day with their
children and families.
Everyone enjoyed turkey, dress-
ing and all the trimmings.
The children played games while
the men played dominoes and the
women took pictures.

The Rug Club met Jan. 3 at the
Clubs and Library building for a
covered dish luncheon.
Hostess Lucille Steelhammer
served homemade chili and beans.
Others brought trimmings for it.
In the absence of the president,
Vice-president Juarez Gerla presid-
ed over the business meeting. She
opened with prayer.
A motion was made that the same
slate of officers for 1985 be accepted
as we had for 1984. They will be in-
stalled at 11:30 a.m. Feb. 8 at the
Ranch Motel.
The door prize was won by Marian
Johnston.

daughter, Carrie Elizabeth.
She was born Nov. 21 at Riverside
Hospital in Corpus Christi. She was
21V2 inches long and weighed 8
pounds, 3 ounces at birth.

their 50th wedding anniversary Jan.
3 at a dinner at Phil’s OK Cafe in
Tynan.
There were 32 friends from
Sunrise Beach and the State Park to
help them celebrate. A candle lit
table and decorated cake added to
the festive occasion.
A card shower was held at the
campground. Bertha and Andy were
surprised by the great abundance of
