84 I MEMORIES OF THE 20TH CENTURY
His parting words of advice are as true in Sherman's sesquicentenni-
al year as they were in 1919: "There is in all public and private enterprises
a maximum and a minimum standard. The community that aims at the
minimum, doing its work only so that it is good enough, will never reach
its highest development. It will never prove attractive to others and will
inevitably lose to those communities that appreciate and maintain a high
standard of living conditions for their people."
His plan was accepted on October 10, 1919.
We moved to Sherman in 1948-the city's centennial year. Among
its attractive features, at that time, were a series of small parks along the
banks of Post Oak Creek. Pecan and magnolia trees provided shade for
children's birthday parties and added grace and beauty to the town. Today
a four-lane highway replaces the parks; and a concrete ditch channels the
surface waters. There is little evidence of Kessler's other plans to beautify
the city.
I like to think that our street, that follows the creek, was named by
someone who remembered George Kessler-remembered a vision too wor-
thy to forget.
Last week I planted two more trees in our yard on Kessler
Boulevard-trees that I hope will flourish into the twenty-first century.
"Planting trees," Kessler said," .... brings pronouncedly good results."
