To Our Friends.
We'bolieve that there are many peo
pie who are friends to the Telephonk
in Van Zandt county and are anxious
to see it succeed. You all know that
we have done all in our power to in-
crease the circulation of tho Tele-
phone, but.it is not within the power
of one man'to see everybody, besides
we are compelled to be in our office
the most of the time. Now we wish
to ask each friend to help us, we don’t
want you to give up your businesa in
order to become an agent for the Tel-
ephone, bat we would like for each of
you’to speak to tho people you come
in contact with daily and get them to
subscribe for the Telephone. If each
subacriber would make it a point to
do this we could soon double our sub-
scription. Help ua to increase c ur
circulation and we will double the
value of the paper to you. While we
ask you to help us(and at the same
time to help yourselves) we do not ask
it for nothing, for each subacriber you
bring or sends to us we will give you
a recelpt;>ntitllng you to 8 months
subscription.

dance Thursday night in the south-
ern part of this county, an altercation
took place between Willis Barlow and
two Miller boya, butfrien l* interfered
in time to prevent any one from be-
ing seriously hurt. Barlow theu re-
sumed bis position aa fiddler, and bad

he fell forwards on hi* face. He was

There Were no marks on him, and the
cause of his death is unknown.
DeAR 8ir—The people of Harris
county have begun to view wilh alarm
the encroachments which the admin-
istration of atfaira at the Huntsville
and Uuak Slate prisons have made
upon the industrial enterprise* and
the material development of the Stale.
We feel it ia lime to call a halt. This
ruinous policy of employing convict
labor jn competition with honest work-
ingmen, cheapening manufactured
products to starvation prices, is eating
out the vital*of wage workers, far-
mers and private capitalists, it is stag-
nating local commerce and driving a-
way from our Htale the young ma-
chanica, laborers and men of small
means to whom every community
must accord substantial support and
encouragement if it does not wish to
topple lo deray. The people of Harris
county feel that their cause and their
grievance is the heritage and condi-
tion ofevery county in this broad anJ
glorioi s empire Htale. We ask you to
give us your aid in bringing such pres-
sure to bear upon the ooming Legisla-
ture as will insure the removal of this
I’eNITeNTI ARY iNCUnUg
that threatens to crush out every
health iuterrsl and industrial enter-
prise in Texas. Oo forth to every hon-
est citixen, every neighbor and friend
who believes in the triumph of res-
pectaple labor over those whose work
is the wagea of tbeirains, and ask them
lo join you in a movement lo check
this evil. We ask you to call a meet-
ing in every school district of your
county, in every voting precinct and
in every town. Tell your constituents
what they already know: That the
taxes which they pay out of their pock-
ets for the prevention of crime is be-
ing, and has been, appropriated for
years, and is still being appropriated
to the building of extensive plants of
machinery at Huntsville and Rusk,
in which every mechanical fabric is
being made that can enter into the e-
ccnomy of life; tell them how these
products, made by laborers who work
for the bare modicum of subsistence
which keeps body and soul together,
are being thrown upon the markets in a
CONSTANTLY INCReASINO VOLUM6,
with the result to kill with their com-
petition the respectable artisans of
the State, who are struggling honestly
to give their families comfortable
homes; tell them that favored con
traotors hire out hundreds of these
convicts every year, and work them
under irresponsible and inhumane
guards; work them in chains on pain-
tations for forty cent* a day, and ask
them how can the honest farmer on
the adjoining plantation compete wilh
these hired and half starved criminals.
We ask you to do this from a sense of
patriotic duty, and to do such other
things as in your judgment the emer-
gency of the evil complained of may
demand. A committee of conference,
consisting of suclr a number of mem-
bers as may hereafter he agreed upon,
say one from eacli congressional dis-
trict or State senatorial diatrict.be
•elected, who will proceed to Austin
and lay this penitentiary grievance
before tire legislature, and ask sucq a
bill of relief aa may forever remove
the danger which threatens the vital
prosperity of the honest people of the
State. I he old cry echoed for so many
years at the State capitol; the old cry
that ’’the penitentiary should be made
self supporting,"
must ne MeT
by the cry that “The men who would
observe the laws and pay the taxes
must not be disciplined into a line
leading to comtempt of the law."
There are thousands of county roads
to be built in the State; there are
millions of cubic yards of rock to be
quarried; there are thousands of acres
of sugar land, in addition to those al-
ready being worked by convict labor.
Let the State take charge of it* own
convict*, and cease farming them out
to private contractor*, whether in
workshop*, on public work* or on plan-
tation. Let the amount for which a
peraon can be sent to the penitentiary
be lucres**! f $100 from $2(1 a* at
present, thn* very materially lessen-
ing the number who are annually sect
there. All those convicted for
amounts under the $100, to be kept in
the various counties and worked on
connty roads, etc. There certainly
should be and must be in Ibis broad
State sufficient wisdom to formulate a
plan by which the convict* of Texaa
can be worked without Lriugiogtb*'
