Today's Pacemaker Patients
Let Their Fingers Do The Talking
Most of the half-a-million
people around the world who
have pacemakers controlling
their heartbeats lead lives like
those led by other people the
same age. Pacemaker wearers
climb mountains, are cheer-
leaders and even have run in
the Boston marathon.
However, every so often the
pacemaker wearer has to
check in with his or her
physician to monitor the per-
formance of the heart and the
tiny little device that controls
the rate at which it beats.
Today, new advances in
electronics and medicine let
these patients check in with
their doctor without ever leav-
ing home. They do it by
telephone.
A device called the telephone
monitoring system allows the
patient to send an instantane-
ous electrical report of both his
heart and pacemaker perfor-
mance to his physician. This
transmission is made simply
by dating the physician’s
office, stacking sensors from
the monitoring system to his
fingers, and letting the moni-
tor do the rest. It sends a high
quality electrocardiogram and
other information to the doc-
tor’s receiving unit.
When the physician, or his
assistant, determine that an
adequate measure of the pa-
tient’s heart performance has
been made a button is pressed
which signals the patient to
pick up the phone. After
setting up another appoint-
ment (usually for a month or
two later), the procedure is
:ompleted.
The patient is spared the
time and much of the expense
of an office visit. The physician
able to keep electronic tabs on
his patient's performance.
Early models of this device
required the placement of
large electrodes under the
patient's armpits. Often, to
enhance electrical conductivi-
ty, they had to be dipped in a
salt water solution. Needless
to say, it was uncomfortable.
Today's advanced telephone
monitoring systems are small-
er and work with tiny finger-
tip electrodes which simply
slip on the finger of the
patient. They are much more
convenient, and they are more
relible, too.
In fact, for pacemaker pa-
tients, letting their fingers do
the talking isrtW preferred
way to make an office call to
their physician.

(36-39c) I Good Neighbor Commission is
of important to Texas. Never
before have we needed so
much to build best relations
possible with our neighbors to
the south.
I have asked various selected
citizens throughout the State
for advice and guidance with
respect to the purposes, goals
and functions of the Good
Neighbor Commissioner. I am
very pleased with the response
I have receive^. All agree that
continuing the Good Neighbor
Commission would be benefi-
cial to the state.
I believe that if the Good
Neighbor Commission focuses
its efforts on its inter-american
functions, especially in im-
proving and maintaining good
relations with Mexico, it can
go a long way in benefiting
the State of Texas. I am
hopeful that the 66th Session
of the Legislature will provide
the Good Neighbor Commis-
sion with more direction and
guidance so that it may better
serve the people. ......u

If we decided today we
needed another power
plant,these kids would
be in college before
it could be ready.” m/m
"Most people are
surprised to leam how
long it takes to build an
electric generating plant.
It takes about eight
years to locate and pur-
chase the right site, order
equipment, plan and
build a lignite-fueled
power plant, obtain ap-
provals from all regulatory
agencies, and then test
the plant's operation care-
fully. It takes even longer
for a nudear-fueled plant
—10 to 12 years.
Right now, because of the shortage and
high cost of natural gas, Texas Electric is build-
ing new plants that run on lignite coal and one
which will use nuclear fuel.
These plants are
very expensive. But we
must build them so
that when the need is
there tomorrow, tire elec- {JTVIC©
tricity will Ire there hx»."
Electricity You count on it today.
We're working to keep it that way.
