Chappell
Services for Sherman M. Chap-
pell, 49, of Bryan were held at 2:00
p.m. Sunday, November 10, at The
Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in
Bryan. Mr. Chappell died Friday
morning. November 8, in Bryan.
Burial was in the Bryan City
Cemetery. Mike Vanderberg of-
ficiated.
Mr. Chappell, born in Sidney,
had lived in Bryan 10 years. He
was a supervisor at General
Telephone Co. and had been with
GTE for 29 years in Ozona, San
Angelo and Bryan. He was a
veteran of the Navy Reserve and a
member of Central Church of
Christ.
Survivors include his wife,
Roanna Chappell of Bryan; three
sons, Randy Chappell of Bryan,
Lynn Chappell of Spearman, and
Donny Chappell of Bryan; two
daughters, Patti Chappell and
Terri Gilmore both of Bryan; his
mother, Lulabelle Chappell of
Comanche; two brothers, Wendell
Chappell of Azle and Freddie
Chappell of Sweetwater; a sister,
Thelma McGhee of Follett; and six
grandchildren.
Kern
Funeral services for Mrs. Ed-
ward (Alma Dee) Kern, 68, of 119
W. Duncan, Comanche, were held
at 10:00 o'clock Monday morning,
November 11. in Comanche
Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating
was Rev. Richard Rust, pastor of
the East Side Baptist Church,
Comanche.
Burial was in Oakwood
Cemetefy, Comanche.
Mrs. Kern died at 2:55 o'clock
Sunday morning, November 10, at
Western Hills Nursing Home,
Comanche.
Daughter of Jesse and Minnie
Hamilton Tubbs, she was born
August 1, 1917, in Texas. She had
lived most of her life here^ Mrs.
Kern was a member of the Baptist
Church.
Mrs. Kern is survived by her
husband; a son, Ted Spires of
Toele, Utah; a daughter, Rebecca
Ann Smith of Girard; a brother,
Darwin Hamilton of Seadrift; five
grandchildren; and one great-
grandchild.
Cardwell
Richard “Rick" Cardwell. 33, of
Whitney died at 3:15 am.
Tuesday. November 5, in Brooke
Army Medical Center in San An-
tonio. He died of burns received
when a leaking butane gas line ex-
ploded at his home.
Cardwell, a former Comanchean.
is the grandson of Mrs. Johnnie
Cardwell of Western Hills Nursing
Home and the late B. G. Cardwell
and the late Lewis and Effie
Bowers.
, Graveside services were held
Thursday, November 7, in
LaWnhaven Memorial Gardens,
with Dr. Harold Odum, pastor of
the First Presbyterian Church in
San Angelo officiating, under the
direction of Johnson’s Funeral
Home.
Cardwell was born July 31.
1952, in San Angelo. He was
married to Paula Sanders on
January 22, 1983, in Sinton.
Survivors include his wife; one
son, Jason Lewis Cardwell of
Whitney; two daughters, Becca
Ami Cardwell and Natalie Jane
Cardwell, both of San Angelo; his
parents, Joe and Lou Cardwell of
San Angelo; two brothers, Phillip
Ray Cardwell of Fort Worth and
Bobby Cardwell of Columbus; and
one grandmother, Johnnie Car-
dwell of Comanche.
Rick's friends are having a Rick
Cardwell Memorial Golf Tour-
nament Sunday, November 24, at
Santa Fe Golf Course with a shot-
gun start at 8 a.m.
Dean
Martin
Funeral services for Mary B.
(Mrs. Rex L.) Martin, 80, of Lub-
bock, formerly of Mart, were held
at 11:00 Monday, November 11, at
the Littlepage Funeral Home
Chapel, Mart. Burial was in the
Mart Cemetery.
Mrs. Martin, a homemaker, died
Friday, November 8, in Lubbock.
Born in Milam County, Texas,
November 13, 1904, she married
Rex L. Martin February 2, 1924,
and had lived in Mart over 40
years. Her husband preceded her
in death, August 24, 1971. She
moved to John Knox Village,
Lubbock, in June, 1977. She was a
member of the First Baptist Chur-
ch and the Order of the Eastern
Star of Mart.
She is survived by one son, Rex
L. Martin, Jr. of Fort Worth; three
daughters, Mrs. Mark (Doris)
Beavers and Mrs. Richard (Nell)
Thompson, both of Lubbock, and
Mrs. Daymond (Mary Anne)
Power, of Comanche; one sister;
one brother; seven grandchildren;
and one great-grandchild.
The family requests that
memorials be made to the John
Knox Village Medical Center,
Lubbock, or your favorite charity.
Funeral services for Morris
Sheperd Dean, 82, of 423 S.
Williams, Hamilton, former
Comanche High School vocational
agriculture teacher, were held at
10:00 o'clock Saturday morning,
November 9, at the First Baptist
Church in Hamilton. Officiating
was Rev. Tim Moody.
Burial was in Erath Gardens of
Memory near Stephenville, under
direction of Riley Funeral Home,
Hamilton.
Mr. Dean died suddenly at 8:30
o'clock Thursday morning,
November 7, at Hamilton General
Hospital.
Mr. Dean, son of the late Walter
Stilwell Dean and Mary Lydia
Rogers Dean, was born February
6, 1903 in Gainesville, had resided
in Hamilton for the past 25 years.
He and his family resided in
Comanche for a number of years
during his teaching career. He first
married Franees Stuteville on Sep-
tember 6, 1932. She died February
14, 1980. On February 14, 1981, he
married Cleone Robinson of
Hamilton. He was a member of the
First Baptist Church, Hamilton.
Mr. Dean is survived by one
daughter, Frances Ann Allen of
Fort Davis; three grandchildren
and one great-grandchild; two
sisters, Rachel and Ruth Dean,
both of Azle; and a brother,
Damon Dean of Azle.
Zgabay
Funeral services for Mrs. Agnes
K. Zgabay, 71, of Richmond, were
held Thursday afternoon, Novem-
ber 7th, at 2:00 p.m. at the Sacred
Heart Catholic Church in Rich-
mond with interment at
Greenlawn Memorial Park in
Rosenberg.
Rosary was recited Wednesday
evening, November 6th, at 7:30
p.m. at the Davis-Dawson Funeral
Home in Rosenberg. Msgr James
Madden officiated.
Mrs. Zgabay, an active member
of the Sacred Heart Catholic
Church, died Tuesday afternoon,
November 5th, at Polly Ryon
Memorial Hospital in Richmond
following a lengthy illness.
Survivors include her husband,
August T. Zgabay of Richmond; 2
daughters, Helen Lolley of Rich-
mond and Evelyn Bolf of Coman-
che; 5 sons, Marvin Zgabay of
Fredericksburg, August T.
Zgabay, Jr. of Wharton, Gene
Zgabay of Danbury, Emil and
Mark Zgabay of Needville; 2
sisters, Mary Zgabay of Boling
and Dorothy Lipinski of Needville;
7 brothers, Jim and Julius Maresh
of Houston, Edwin Maresh of
Alvin, Emil Maresh of Needville,
Delphine Maresh of Beasley, Alex
Maresh of Richmond, and Ernest
Maresh of Dickinson; 15 gran-
dchildren; and 3 great-
grandchildren.
Hulsey
Mrs. Claude (Sarah Mae)
Hulsey, 82, longtime resident of
the Downing community, died
Tuesday, November 5, at her De
Leon home.

Funeral Home, De Leon.

Born August 23, 1903, in
Comanche County, she married
Claude Hulsey October 2, 1921.
He died June 23, 1956. She was a
member of Downing Baptist
Church.
She also was preceded in death
by a son, John Doyle Hulsey.
Survivors include three sons,
James Q. “Buck” Hulsey of Fort
Worth, Jerry W. Hulsey of Fort
Worth, and Gerald B. Hulsey of
Jermone, Idaho; nine gran-
dchildren; and 13 great-
grandchildren.
Hillhouse
Clarence Edgar Hillhouse, 66, of
210 W. Mulberry, Comanche, died
at 6:00 o'clock Wednesday after-
noon, November 6, at the Veterans
Administration Hospital in Tem-
ple.
Funeral services for Mr.
Hillhouse were held at 2:00 o'clock
Saturday afternoon, November 9,
at Comanche Funeral Home.
Officiating were Fr. Jerry
Frawley, of the Sacred Heart
Catholic Church, and Rev. Richard
Rust, pastor of the East Side Bap-
tist Church, Comanche.
Burial was in Oakwood
Cemetery, Comanche.
Mr. Hillhouse, son of the late
Edgar and Sophie Rawls
Hillhouse, was born October 19,
1919, at San Saba. He had resided
in Comanche for the past 12 years.
Mr. Hillhouse was married Oc-
tober 8, 1967, to Wanda Thom-
pson in Coleman. He was a mem-
ber of the Catholic Church, and
served in the U.S. Marine Corps
during World War II. He was a
retired butcher who was employed
by a Big Spring meat market for
some time.
Mr. Hillhouse is survived by his
wife, Wanda of Comanche; a son,
Jerry Hillhouse of Copperas Cove;
a stepson, Bergess DeLay of
Abilene; two daughters, Dorothy
Conners of Texas City and Joyce
Jones of Odessa; three gran-
dchildren; and two great-
grandchildren.
Dodd
Rev. Louis Cabello Dodd, 81,
longtime resident of the Hasse
community, Rt. 1, Comanche, died
at 4:10 o'clock Tuesday afternoon,
November 6, at Western Hills
Nursing Home, following a
lengthy illness.
Funeral services for Rev. Dodd,
a retired farmer and pastor of the
Hasse Revival Center for 28 years,
were held at 2:30 o'clock Thursday
afternoon, November 7, at Coman-
che Funeral Home Chapel. Of-
ficiating was Rev. H. B.
Bridgeforth.
Burial was in Sardis Cemetery,
Hasse.
Pallbearers were grandsons.
Son of the late McCagen C. and
Annie Cabello Dodd, he was born
February 11, 1904 in Kerrville. He
had been a resident of the Coman-
che area for 50 years. He was
married March 25, 1925 to the
former Gladys Ellington. She died
July 4, 1982.
Rev. Dodd is survived by five
sons, Richard Dodd of De Leon,
Roland Dodd Sr. and Danny R.
Dodd Sr., both of Comanche; Ken-
neth M. Dodd Sr. of Midlothian
and Keith P. Dodd Sr. of Dallas;
two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy
Smith of Dallas and Mrs. Charlene
Young of Quinlan; 20 gran-
dchildren; and 15 great-
grandchildren.
Nelson
Funeral services for Mrs. Clara
Viola Medford Nelson, 78-year-old
De l^eon resident, were held at
10:00 o'clock Thursday morning,
November 7, at Nowlin Funeral
Home in De Leon.
Burial was in Turkey Creek
Cemetery.
Mrs. Nelson died at 5:35 o’clock
Tuesday morning, November 6, at
Palo Pinto General Hospital in
Mineral Wells.
She was born March 3, 1907, in
Haskell.
Survivors include her husband,
Walter Massey Nelson of Odessa;
six sons, Nathan N. Nelson of
Odessa, Joel Benjamin Nelson of
Seminole, Walter Paul Nelson of
De Leon, James Samuel Nelson of
Andrews and Elon Mark Nelson

Spalding
Captain Wesley E. Spalding
(Ret.) of Clearwater, Florida,
brother of Henry Spalding, Sid-
ney, died Wednesday, November
6, of a massive stroke while on
vacation in Ohio.
Funeral services for Captain
Spalding, attended by Henry
Spalding and wife, Sarah, were
held Monday, November 11, in
Clearwater.
Born April 5, 1912, in Hill Coun-
ty, Texas, Captain Spalding was
reared in Anderson County. He
joined the U.S. Army in 1932 and
retired in 1955. He served in both
Europe and the Pacific during
World War II.
In addition to his brother, Cap-
tain Spalding is survived by his
wife, Alberta, of the home; two
sons, Larry Spalding of Clear-
water, Florida, and Ronald
Spalding of New York, New York;
and two grandchildren.
Agnew
Funeral services for Ray Agnew,
82, retired Rising Star grocer,
known to many area residents,
were held at 10:00 o'clock Satur-
day morning, November 9, at the
Church of Christ in Rising Star.
Burial was in Rising Star
Cemetery.
Mr. Agnew died Thursday,
November 7, at a Rising Star nur-
sing center.
Born January 20, 1903 in Rising
Star, he married Alta Burrus May
19,1925, in Abilene. He was owner
of E. F. Agnew and Son Grocery
Store and a member of the Cham-
ber of Commerce and Retail
Grocers' Association.
Mr. Agnew served on the Rising
Star City Council for 17 years and
was awarded the Rising Star
