A third person, a 23-year-old
Houston woman who works in a
North Shore lounge, also
reportedly assisted McManus in
his escape April 23, but is not ex-

reportedly assisted investigators
in finding McManus
Sources said the woman ap-
parently was to join McManus
after he left Baytown in a 1973
Chevrolet Monte Carlo, allegedly
provided by Plaskett and
Beckworth. but she apparently
became frightened after
McManus left and contacted
authorities about the plan
Sources said the woman
assisted McManus in planning
and carrying out a scheme in-
volved in the flight, which in-
cluded leaving his 1963 Ford
compact on Gulf Pump Road
near Barrett Station April 23.
The car had several blood
smears inside, which sources
said the woman helped put
there.
Others said the woman was
reportedly romantically involved
with McManus during the weeks
before he was set to go to trial
April 25 in State District Judge I.
D. McMaster s court.
McManus was indicted in con-
nection with the July 24 murders
of Mr and Mrs. Paul Cantrell of
Baytown. Following nearly
seven weeks of jury selection,
his trial was set April 25, but he
fled the area April 23 and did not
show up in court as scheduled.

Authorities determined the
robbery occurred in the Jackson-

located McManus In motel room
there with an Ohio woman
Officials said Wednesday the
person involved In the bank
robbery there was arreted by
Florida authorities and about
311.000 of the money taken was
reportedly recovered.
The woman, who has
reportedly been placed under
police protection, is expected to
testify against McManus in his
murder trial
Another woman, Paula
Cantrell Derese, 27, is also to
testify in the trial after making a
promise to prosecutors in return
for reduction of murder charges
against her.
Mrs. Derese, only child of the
Cantrells', was also indicted in
connection with the murders,
but charges were reduced to first
degree murder last January in
return for her promise to testify
in McManus’ trial. She is ex-
pected to be sentenced by State
District Judge Joseph Guarino
following the McManus trial.
A third person, Vemon Olney,
a former business partner and
fnend of McManus', was also in-
dicted in connection with the
murder. His trial on charges of
conspiracy to commit capital
murder is expected to be set
following McManus' trial.
