“I don’t understand your method
at all,” said Miss Obesity somewhat
irately to the professor of physical
culture. “I have just been talking
to Miss Skinny Bones, and she says
that your advice to her is exercise
"and diet. Now, you have told me
that diet and exercise are what I need.
How can you possibly hope to ac-
complish such different ends with
the same means ?”
“Simplest thing in the world,
madam,” answered the professor.

The fur trade of North America has
always been largely conducted on the
principle of barter, writes Duncan
MacArtliur In fhe New" England Mag-
astna. The transactions with the In-
dians are carried on In a very simple
manner. When a hunter brings In biis
collection of furs to uny trading post,
which he usually does twice a year, In
October and March, he Is taken to the
trading room, where the official In
charge carefully examines, classifies
and values each skin, and when the
whole pack is gone over he bauds the
Indian a number of tallies, or small
pieces of wood or metal, each repre-
senting the value of a “made beaver,”
aud the whole representing the vahie
of the entire catch. The Indian then
proceeds to the storeroom and selects
such articles as be requires—blankets,,
eapots, guns, knives, tea, tobacco, etc.—
in payment for whieh he hands back
Els tallies until they are all gone and
his purchasing powers are exhausted.
He then departs, another hunter takes
his place and IS dealt with In a similar
manner, and so on until all the furs
In possession of the whole band of In-
dians have passed Into the hands of the’
trade*. Formerly It was customary to
give a good hunter a “dram” qpd some
small presents fa appreciation of his
Industry. 1
