What 1 Know About Hardware
and the Weather.
There is considerable uneasiness
about rain. I am inclined to tho opin-
ion that we will have plenty rain in
May. The enormous masses of water
that passed over us in the shape of
gulf clouds and invisible vapor last
month and caused washouts and
overflows north and east of us will
como back this month in tho shape of
storms with now and then a cyclone or
hail. I do not sell at or below oost un-
less it be an article that is no good or
that I um'anxious to cloEe out. The
head of this firm does not open up and
sweep out in order to save clerkhire.
In spite of other disadvantages such
as rent clerkhire; taxes insurance etc
I manage to keep a first-class hard-
ware store. I do not ship fish hooks
and razors in car lots hut 1 do ship
more staple goods in cailoads than
any other hardware firm has ever at-
tempted in this market. Tho recent
depression in Eastern markets and
cue rates of freight enable me to sell
nails wire fruit jars baling ties iron
and other staples lower than they havo
ever been sold hero and yet inako a
fair profit. Yours for hardware.

The phrase a feather in his cap Ig-
nifvinc honor and distinction m-nsn
from tho custom prevalent among the
ancient Syrians and perpetuated to this
day nmong tho various suvago or semi-
civilized tribes of Asia and America of
adding a new feather to their headgear
for every enemy slain.
In the days of chivalry the maiden
knight received his casque featherless
and won his plumes as ho had won his
spurs. In a manuscript written by
Richard Hansard in 1598 and pre-
served in tho British museum it is said
of tho Hungarians that it had .been an
nncient custom among them that none
should wear a feather but ho who had
killed a Turk and to such ouly It
was lawful to show tho number of
feathers in their caps. In Scotland and
Wales it is still customary for tho
sportsman who kills his fli-st wood duck
ro piucK out a leather and stick it in
ma cap. Exchange
