tho crown crying "caw caw'' more de-

and at last the hawk dropcd the chick
and angrily dashed upward again.
For minutes the battle laged over the
tree tops. The hawk was fierce in his de-
fense but the crows using the same tac-
tics as before gradually drove him higher
and higher still until finally discomfited
and thoroughly beaten tin; bird of prey

With feathers sadly ruffled and her

slowly and painfully hopping back
through the swamp to the maternal

of Feeding Hills was cutting cornslalks

UncleJimmie in tho forties aud fifties
was one of the leading divines of Ken-
tuckya typical Andrew .lackson in ap-
pearance and addre-s. 5ut un fortunately
he was incumbered with an almost un-
governable appetite for strong drink
lie was then ii member of a church si.
miles south of Newport. The leverend
gentleman became a member of the
Washingti'iiians the great temperance
society of that day. At the next busi-
ness meeting of the church tho preacher
was surprised to hear charges preferred
against him for immoral conduct aud to
receive from Iho irate deacons the fol-
lowing explanation: By becoming a
member of a secular society as helpful
to moral reformation he at onco admit-
ted that the help afforded by the society
was stronger than that of the church
thus placing a temperance society in ad-
vance of the church as a moral force.
The result was that the reverend gen-
tlemen withdrew from the society. A
few months later a member was called
up for getting drunk at an old fashioned
Kentucky "hog killing." Uncle .linimie
was pre-eiit at the trial and during its
progress said to the court: "You called
mo to account for joining a temperance
society. You are now trying this man
for getting drunk llow much ought a
man to drink to be a consistent Baptist"'"
That remark" concluded that trial. Cin-

thinking to make -hurt work of his game

hatchet from the hunter's hand and
furious with rage and pain began tear-

Rich defended himself to the be.-t of

away from the fierce animal. A fearful
struggle ensued and finally the panther
got one of the hunter's hands in his

With hi.- free hand Rich succeeded in

Hell ill lie mi a Ciiiucl!
What do jou think of the idea of hell
the future abode of tho wicked being
situated in th- nucleus of some gigantic
comet? This opinion odd as it may seem
to those'who havo given comets and tho
future state of the dead but little atten-
tion has been entertained by many really
eminent s-ii ntists and philosophers
among them the learned Dr. Whiston
the friend and sometime adviser of the
great Sir Isaac Newton.
In answer to the inquiries of a friend
who wrote to ask tho doctor for some
tangible proof on the subject the follow-
ing unique theories were advanced: "Ac-
cording to my calculations and deduc-
tions this theory which you rightly say
'must belong to me and mo alone' does
locate hell tho awful prison house of tho
damned in tho fiery nucleus of soma
(perhaps jet undiscovered) comet of un-
thinkable size.
"In this wide circling chariot of firu
they will be whirled in the twinkling of
an eye from Iho intolerable heat of tho
surface of the sun back into space hun-
dreds and hundreds of millions of miles
from the rent torch bearer of our sys-
tem. Thus instantly the wretched ton-
ants will lie given two unbearable ex-
tremes one of cold and the other of
heat this to continue through tho end

l.iteiar Chances In New York.
Iho ncnial chances lor literary suceesj
in New Yuri: are in no respect different
from those which any greater city pre-
sents over those of a smaller community
If a literary man or woman can go to
New York with a certainty offered in tho
way of a fairly paying position then I
say by all means go and if ho has any
talent m him it will come out and win
quick stu c-os. But if ho has only ordi-
nary gifts then let him stay where ho is
oven with a certainty offered him. New
York li'iM- out nothing to such a man
except a poor livelihood. Or if a writer
has established a fair reputation is
known by editors and publishers through
letters and bo feels that there is some-
thing in him which only the activity of
a great city will bring out then let him
go to btisx Gotham.
But let hun bo careful that he docs not
confuse ambition with talent. Now
Yorlc is lull of ambitious writers and
they will always remain ambitious al-
ways reac lung out to cat the literary oats
which hang suspended just a littlo out
of their r aeh. Ambition is i splendid
quality but. tho talent must bo tlicro to
back it up Aud tho latter is what is
lacking in so many of tho ambitious lit-
erary spirits in Now York today It is
all ambition. E. V. Bok in Ladies'
Homo Journal.
