for permission to reprint the letter in The Quarterly, he kindly gave
it, and his answer is quoted here in part: "It is interesting to me
that since the publication of that letter I have received answers to
five letters which were written nearly a year ago, and four of them
were not in my envelopes. Hope others have received a like benefit."
Mr. MINNICH's letter so aptly describes the frustration that all gene-
alogists feel at times.
DEAR YOU WHO DIDN'T ANSWER:
You didn't answer my letter even though I sent you a stamped self-
addressed envelope. Maybe my 15 cent stamp that you steamed off is
worth more to you than the information I could now send you, but I
would like you to know what you missed by ignoring my letter. You
who advertised for an out of print publication about a certain family -
I had just found that family to be in my line, so I wrote to you ask-
ing about the book. I had not heard of it. I told you where I am in
that line and asked if you had any information. You kept my stamped
envelope and ignored me. But, someone answered another letter and I
now have the book you wanted and could tell you where to get a copy,
but why should I waste another 15 cent stamp. You've already cost me
30 cents. And you who advertised for a certain man's parents - I sent
you two generations with names, dates, places, moves, siblings, and
in-laws. I didn't send you a stamped envelope because I didn't ask
for an answer. But, I expected the common courtesy of thanks for
those two generations. Now I have more generations, back to the immi-
grant ancestor in the 1600's, but I won't waste my stamp on you. And
you, my second and third cousins who didn't answer - you won't see
. this and will probably never know what you might have known. It's
your loss. There are several more of you who kept my stamps and ig-
nored my question's. But my files are growing and I won't need your
+ information someday. I'll have it from another source. So keep my
stamps. I think you lost more than you gained., But if you ever
write me and send me a stamped self-addressed envelope, I'll answer
the best I can. Sincerely, The Man Who Wrote The Letter You Ignored
