A NEA CENTRAL LIBRARY FOR DALLAS
A NEW GENEALGY DEPARTMENT FOR US
On Sunday, April 18, 1982 a new Central Library at 17>
Young Street was dedicated for Dallas. The Central Library
located between Young and Wood Streets across from the new
City Hall and near the Convention Center.
The new $42.7 million Central Library building was made
possible by a combination of efforts by the public and private
sectors. It can house 2,286,000 volumes, and seat 2,894 peop'-,
There are many features in the new Central Library that
all who visit will enjoy and find helpful. Some of these are
a snack bar, a Library store which will sell such items as
library publications, book preservation materials and library
related gift items, pencils and paper, and also coin-operate_
lockers, all of which are located on the main floor. There a
200 parking places located in the basement with entrance on
Wood Street. As of this writing parking will be $ .50 for thr
first hour and $ .75 for each hour after until 5 P M when it
will be $ .50 per hour. There is no maximum. The garage i-
open from 8:30 A M to 9 P M Monday thru Thursday and frcz
to 5 P M Friday and Saturday. There are many parking lots
located near the Library as well as places to eat.
The greatly expanded space in the Genealogy Library will ue
welcome news to all. The Genealogy Department is on the 8th
Floor with the History & Social Sciences. We have our own room
There are many new features, a number of changes and a fe,,
things the same. The Texas Collection was seperated from
Genealogy and is housed on 7th Floor. You will most likely
notice that some of the book and microfilm on Texas that y,
used before are gone. Look for them on the 7th Floor. Most
noticeably missing are the Tax Lists for Texas that are now
housed in the Texas Collection. Also now on the 7th Floor are
Dallas and Texas City Directoris, and Texas Newspapers. The
7th Floor is limited access and has rules different from other
areas. Be sure to check with them. However, Genealogy still has
Ellis Co. Tax List, Death Records and Probate Records, and some
Histories of Texas Counties.
The Department is all open stack arrangement with no listed
access. This allows you to browse and touch all books. As you
enter the double doors of the Genealogy Department, you are
greated by an able staff member, and are asked to sign in at
the main desk. They are now using a sign in sheet instead of
the little sheets of paper we had before. Please don't forget
to sign in.
On your left on horizonal shelving are the current period-
icals in alphabethical order as before. Below them on the
bottom shelf are the maps and atlases. The low stack shelving
in the front of the room begin the low numbered books-Reference
Books, Library of Congress books, etc. These are the books th.at
were behind the desk in the old building. From there the num-
bers continue to the high stacks in the rear, then to the two
rows in the middle and then to the stacks on the side wall.
When you have finished with your book please return it to the
rust colored shelve that you find in the middle of each
section. This will help the library staff and us.
