FIRST BISHOP OF ROME!
LINUS WAS AN EAPLY CWOBTIAN IN POME, A PBIBND TO BOTH ST FttUL AND TIMO-
THY HIS NAME IS MENTIONED BUT ONCE IN THE BIBLE, BY ST RAUL IN HIS LETTER TO
TIMOTHY (II TIM. 4:2l). THAT THE FIRST BISHOP OF ROME, AFTER THE APOSTLES, WAS
NAMED LINUS IS ACCEPTED BY ALL THE ANCIENT HISTORIANS. THE ASSERTION BY
V IRBNAEUS, AND CORROBORATED BOTH BY EUSEBIUS AND THEODORET SSUPFIC-
IENT PROOF THAT THE BISHOP AND ST RAUUS FRIEND WERE ONE AND THE SAME I
' THE CATE OF HIS APPOINTMENT AND THE LIMITS OF HS AUTHORITY ARE POINTS
THAT ARE OBSCURED BY TIME AND HISTORY ALTHOUGH EUSEBIUS STATES THAT HE
BECAME BSHOP OF ROME AFTER THE DEATH OF ST. PETER. THE DURATION OF HIS
OFFICE IS SIVEN BY EUSEBIUS AS AD.6S-80!
IT IS PRESUMED THAT LINUS WA5 BI5H0PIN
ROME ONLY OF THE CHRISTIANS OF GENTILE
ORIGIN, WHILE AT THE SAME TIME ANOTHER
BISHOP HAD AUTHORITY OVER OLDER
JEWISH CHRISTIAN5! NO LOFTY PRE-
EMINENCE WA5 ATTACHED TO THE
OFFICE. IN THOSE CW5, IN FACT
IT WAS DOWNRIGHT DANGEROUS A5
ALL CHRISTIANS WERE LIABLE TO
BEING HUNTED DOWN, PERSECUTED
AND MARTYRED! AND IN FACT
THIS WAS THE WAY LINUS' LIFE
DID END -AS IT DID FOR SO
MANY OF THE EARLY
CHRISTIANS!

with two other lay people, says
an appeal is being made.
But he added that the district
