not even watered. Imt they
grew to a height of several feet
and bore seed. The specimens
of jute which was exhibited on
'Change day before yesterday"
was raised by Prof. Jenks of
Washington Univeisity. The
following note explains the cir-
cumstances of its growth:
Oct 22 1SS0.
"The jute seed which you
gave me was sown about the
20th .0 1 May in a compost of
earth coal-ashes and horse' ma-
nure in a corner of. my back
vard which was shaded by a
'high fence nearly half of the
day .conditions certainty not

mentof the plant The ground
was kept well watered lhe
.specimen had attained a height

the first of October.
"John H. Jerks."
"1418 O" Fallon sJtreeU".
Nothing but failure was an-
ticipated from the trials in this
latitude. The climate is too
cold lor jute. The experiments
were tried with the hopeless
motive of testing the hardiness
of the plant The result is an
agreeable surprise. Its vigor-
ous growth under circumstan-
ces so different-from the con-
ditions cf its-nativity is a very
favorable augury for the suc-
cessful culture of jute in the
gulf states. A southern cor-
respondent assures me that he
can raise' jute on his planta-
tion just as easily as he can
raise corn. The recent ex-
periments .which southern plan-
ters have made in the culti-
vation of jute have been emi-
nently successful. "The possi-
bility of naturalizing this plant
in the United States - is- iiow
affirmatively settled.
But American hands can not
compete with the cheap man-
ual labor of India. In order
to derive from this new indus-
try a yearly return . ef scores
of millions the inventive gen-
ius tor our countrymen must
first devise some cheap me-
chanical or chemical means of
"disintegrating the fibre.
Respectfully yours.
S. Waterhouse.
At a meeting of the execu-
tive board held last Monday
the above letter" of Professor
Waterhouse was submitted to
the consideration of the. direc
tors of the Merchants Exchange
of the city St Louis who have
noticed with great satisfaction
the results of the experiments
of Prof. Waterhouse of Wash
ington University in introduc-.
mg the jute plant in this coun
try.
".From the results observed
it is evident that jute can be
successfully raised in the gulf
states. Therefore the board
recommend the letter of Prof.
Waterhouse relating to jute
culture to the careful consid-
eration of the planters- of the
south." Coleman'? 'Rural
