' Saudj Cotton.
S1-ouk Republican.
Loud complaints from the
other side of the Atlantic found
their way fnto the press a short
time ago about the alleged
adulteration of cotton with sand
and stories were told ot cotton
bales which when opened In
I ivcrpool were found to consist
of layers of sand and cotton
packed alternately. The New
York Cotton Exchange took
the matter up and gave it a
thorough examination the re-
suit of which is to show that a
great outcry has been made
over a very trifling cause.
The. committee that made the
examination find that nearly all
the Southern states have laws
making it an offence to adulter-
ate or fraudulently pack cotton
and there is one person at least
confined in the North Carolina
penitentiary for placing a large
stone in a cotton bale. Old
cotton shippers in New York
testify that the losses by these
tricks have been greatly reduc-
ed in the last twenty-five years.
Cotton bales frequently contain
sand but it is not packed in
them by the planter it is blown
into the bolls in stormy weather
or it comes from contact with
the soil when the stalks are
blown down. There was an un-
usually lare proportion of san-
dy or inferior cotton in the crop
of 1S80-S1 which the planters
were compelled to sell at the
ruinously low prices of 3 to 7
cents a pound and which was
put on the market only for what
it was worth. It is very desir-
able that cotton should be pick-
ed qinncd packed and sent to
market as free from sand and
dust as possible and it is to the
interest of planters that they
should use the best methods for
putting it in this condition; but
the New York Exchange repels
the intimation that cotton is
fraudulently packed by those
who raise it in the south.
The Liquor Trade lu Maine.
N. . Sun.
Lewistcn April 19. In stat-
lug that there is one rumshop
in Maine to every 791 inhabi-
tants you have placed the num-
ber too low. There are about
Soo licensed liquor dealers in
the state and to these should
be added the 200 town agen-
cies and the "dog holes" into
which prohibitionists tell us the
traffic has been driven as the
large majority of the licenses
are held by- druggists hotels
&c. In Lewiston the home of
congressman Dingley there are
70 licensed dealers. It is within
the bonds of reason to affirm
that there are many more "dog
holes' doing business without a
license. There are eight club
rooms in thirty grocery stores
a very exhilarating brand of old
cider is retailed and there are
fifty places where home-brewed
beer is made and sold and the
capacity of the Lewiston brand
of home-brewed for putting a
head on a man has long been
widely recognized. Lewiston
has about 7000 French popula-
tion and in the account of "dog
hofes'r no estimate has been
made of the number required to
supply'the wants of the immi-
grant from the vineclad hills of
sunny Canada and they are not
included in 'the figures above.
It would be safe to say there
are twenty. Including the city
agency which has sold as high
as $13000 worth of liquor in a
single year we have 219 places
where intoxicants can be ob-
tained. Lewiston has a popu-
lation of 19083 according to
the last census which would
give one liquor shop to every
87 inhabitants. And this is the
result of thirty years struggle
by the temperance fanatics. It
should be remembered that
Lewiston is considered the ban
ner temperance -community of
the state and is the home of
Nelson Dingley Jr. the great
apostle of temperance cant
and hypocrisy. G. C. B.

Two '"or "thrde days' ago a
touching discovery was made
during the excavations at Pom-
peii In one of the narrow
streets were found signs of hu-
man remains in the dried mud
lying on top of the strata of
lapilli reaching to the second
floor of' the houses and when
the usual process of pouring
plaster of Paris into the hollow
Iclt by the impression of a body
had been accomplished there
came to light the form of a little
boy. Within the house oppos-
ite to the second floor vindow
of which this infantile form lay
were found a gold bracelet and
the skeleton of a woman the
arms stretched toward the child.
The plaster form of this woman
could not be obtained the im-
pression being too much de-
stroyed. It is evident that the
mother when the liquid mud
began to flow had put her little
boy out of the window into the
lapilli in the hope of saving him
anil he must no doubt have
been overwhelmed.
It only takes about 300000
tons of ice says the New York
Hcrald-to supply the whole of
England during the season
while New York alone uses be-
tween 2000000 and 2225-
000 tons. The English are
not great ice lovers but
the use of it is on the in-
crease there as well as in this
country. Of course a great deal
of the ice consumed with us is
used in Breweries and packing-
houses of which there is no such
demand in England.

As this question is frequently asked w c
will simply say that sue is a lady who lor
upwards of thirty years has untiringly de-
voted her tune and talents as a female phy-
sician and nurse principally among chil-
dren. She has especially studied the con-
stitution and wants of this numerous class
and as a result of this effort and practical
know ledge obtained in a lifetime spent as
a nurse and ph)sician. she has compoun-
ded a Soothing Syrup for children teething.
It operates like magic gmng rest ami
health and is moreover sure to r gulale
the bow els. In consequence of this article
Mrs. Window is becoming orld-rcno ned
as a benefactor of her race; children cer-
tainly do rise up and bless her ; especially
is this the case in this city. Vast quanti-
ties of the Soolhiug Syrup ate daily sold
and used here. We think Mrs. Winslow
has immortalized her name by this invalua-
ble article and we sincerely believe thous-
ands of children have been saed from an
Mrlv (rrav bv its timelv use. and that mil
lions yet unborn will share its benefits and
unite in calling her blessed. No Mother
has discharged her duty to her suffering
little one in our opinion until she has giv-
en it the benefit of Mrs. Window's Sooth-
ing Syrup. Try it mothers try it now.
