The Paris News writes English as

mumps are spreading in Dallas."
An expression of opinion from
Conkling on the Blaine letter of dec
lination would makeinterestingread-
A number of exchanges are falling
into the error of confusing Senator
Piatt of Nebraska with "Me-Too-Platt"
of New York.
Free trade and sailors' rights was
the popular slogan of the democratic
party in the most prosperous era
that ever dawned in the history of
this country and it ought to be
popular to-day.
The Dallas News speaks of the
Religious Herald the ablest Baptist
journal in the South which is pub
lished at Richmond. Ya. as tne col
ored man's paper. Its ignorance is
inexcusable.
Ix refuting the charge that the
"trusts" are the outgrowth of the
policy advocated by them there is
one argument left to the protection
ists. Political trusts have nearly al
ways exibfed.

Editor Grady will go on a mis
sionary tour to St. Louis to aid in
the local option fight. In this cause
his time will be better employed
than in writing editorials for Ins pa-
per on the tariff.

The sight of Uncle Dan'l contend
ing for a perpetuation of the robber
tariff is a monument to the safety
with which error of opinion may be
tolerated in this country when reason
is left to combat it.
The Philadelphia Times says that

forts to do away with secret ses-
sions of the senate but that all ses-
sions in which he participates ought
to be held in secret.
If this wholesale killing off habit
by rejected lovers is not stopped it
wouldn't be a bad idea for the girls
to go into the parlor to receive their

HI
A number of republican sheets
have gratuitously suggested that
James .Russell Xowell be given sec-
ond place on the democratic ticket.
Although intended for irony as
showing how little claim he has
longer to call himself a republican
yet it would not be altogether a bad
idea for the democrats to act upon.
A bill has been introduced in the
New Jersey legislature to prohibit
the glowing of crops from which
any intoxicating .drinks can be made-
This would do away with the grow-
ing of rye hops corn grapes &c
and would kill off agricultural pur
suits entirely. Of course there is
no probability of the bill ever be
coming a law but it is mentioned
merely to show what fools some of
these prohibitionists be.
BEAL1ZE THE DISCOMFORTS.
The sublime picture painted by
Milton the great epic poet of the
council held by satan and his fallen
imps after being kicked out of
heaven to consider and devise by
what ways and means they might
regain their lost estate what courage
they might take from hope and if
none what resolution from despair
has its fitting parallel and counter-
part in the woful lamentations
schemes and machinations of the
g. o. p. which uninterruptedly pull
ed at the public teat filled their
bellies from the cribs and public
stores overrode tho constitution
and carried things with a high hand
for a quarter of a century. This
party built upon sectional hate and
continued in power so long not-
withstanding its reeking corruption
and rottenness would be content to
face the country on that issue still
if from it could take hope. But it is be-
gining to draw upon the mental hori-
zon of the bloodthirstiest most ram-
pant and stupid of the gang that the
war is over that if the party is to be
kept from fa'ling into disintegration
and if it is to be successful at the
polls it must recognize the fact that
a majority of the people of these
United States are actuated by loftier
impulses and puier sentiments of
patriotism than to any longer trust
the execution of the functions of
government to a party of dead issues
past reininiscenses and of sectional
hate and disunion. This fact seems
I to be recognized by even that radi
cal blackguard editor villifier and
traducer Clarkson of the Iowa State
Register who is a member of the na-
tional republican executive commit-
tee. But he deserves no credit for
it. He admits that the -republicans
are in the last 'ditches where no
courage can be gained from hope on
the old issues and that some resolu-
tion from despair as an expedient
must be formed to save the party
from the forebodings of an awful
consuming fate produced by the
realization of the "disadvantage and
discomfort of being out of power"
as Clarkson with a bland childlike
simplicity confesses. As a temporary
makeshift and as a last .resort he
proposes that the republican party
"make such a platform as will with
out change of its former position of
principles accept the war issues as
settled" and that it leave the tariff
on sugar so as to carry Louisiana and
one or two other southern states
with the help of Warmoth. Although
it be a consummation most devoutly
to be hoped for it is not likely that
this old blatherskite will be permit-
ted ever again to behold the promised
land.
If Bro. Blaine was not really in
earnest about declining tho nomina-
tion he ought not to have fooled the
members of his party so. Here is
what some of them say: Senator
Hawley: "Circumstances may arise
that will compel his friends to refuse
to accept this as a final answer."
Piatt: "There is no doubt in my
mind that Mr. Blaine would be
nominated by acclamation should ho
allow his name to be used." Eugene
Hale: "He does not seek tho nomi
nation." Chauncey Depcw: "A ma
jority of his friends will not consider
it final." Farwell: "I infer that Blaine
has an eager desire for renomina-
tion." Frye: "It does not debar
the convention from selecting him if
it chooses." Messrs. Willie Wallie
Phelps and Reed of Maine "cour-
teously but firmly declined to ex-
press an opinion on the subject."
The fossil remains recently un-
earthed near Abilene which have
been puzzling the natives turn out
to be those of an elephas prirnogeus
and the six-feet bones which were
supposed to have been its horns
turn out to be tusks.
If all the "silent cities" in London
