The Houston Post says: '"As
Candidate Hogg Las not yet 'put a
head on' the sheriffs' association it
is presumed that it did not "lie about
Lim." Gen. Hogg knows that the
grievance which the sheriffs have
against him is a selfish personal
matter for which the people do not
care a flip of their finger.
Ho:.. D. C. Giddixgs says that
a railroad built and owned by peo-
ple of Texas and honestly operated
without issuing watered stocks and
fictitious bonds would solve the rail-
road problem in Texas and put an
end to exorbitant rates. There is no
doubt of it and the talk of a rail-
road commission driving capital out
of the state and putting a stop to
railroad building is cheap clap-
trap. Judgz Gustave Cook seems to be
in some respects a second edition of
the Vicar of Bray. When ho was in
the senate he was opposed to grant
ing so much lan'to the railroads.
"When the 21st legislature was dis-
cussing the question of a railroad
commission he applied to Goy. Boss
for ajipointment as one of the com-
missioners in case the measure car-
ried. And now he is the candidate
for governor of the Clirkite3 on an
anti commission platform.
Since Hall's alleged candidacy for
governor has been studiously ignored
all over the state except Melissa
precinct his further candidacy can
no longer be considered respectable
even by his warmest personal friends
who are disposed to wish him well j
and ho can no longer be considered
in any other light than that of a
bushwhacker and guerrilla fighting
against General Hogg in a. cowardly
and underhanded way from motives
of personal spite.

Judge Cook is lowering his dignity
and self-respect by running for gov-
ernor at the instigation of the Clark
crowd. They have no idea of being
able to secure the nomination for
him and make no pretentions that
way. It is simply anything to beat
Hogg. The Clark organs concede
that Hogg will go into the conven-
tion with a majority of the delegates
instructed for and in favor of him
and their only hope is to prevent a
two-thirds majority. Hence it is
as plain as the nose on a mans face
that Cook is simply being used as a
tool and catspaw just like Hall.
Beo county initiates the Cook
campaign by being the first to in-
struct hr delegates for him. Lul-
ing Signal.
The Signal has either been deceiv-
ed by the methods of some of the
other Clarkite organs or else it
humors the deception. The time
that Bee county instructed for Cook
was during the excitement over
fence-cutting lawlessness in Western
and Southwestern Texas four or five
years ago on which occasion Judge
Cook advertised himself through the
papers like he did later in the rail-
road strike. The Basxeb wagers the
Signal dollars to doughnuts that
Beo county will instruct for Hogg.
Tub Galveston News still persists
in being an interloper and an offi-
cious intermeddler in the affairs of
the democratic party. It says that
the commissionists are playing a
desperate game to secure instruc-
tions for Hogg by holding primaries
without sufficient notice andrushin"
things for him. In making this
chaige the News illustrates the
story of "Stop thief!'' and gives away
the scheme of the Clarkites. For
instance B?strop country i- oer-
