brought to recover the possession of

a motion for a new trial.

Two Serious Explosions.
Rio dk Janhiko Jau. 12. Tho
explosion which touk place at Fort
Villngnon was much more serious
than at first supposed. It now ap-
pears that fifteen men wore killed.
Tho blow is a severe one to Fort
Villagnon which was already much
damaged hy the frequent storms of
nhot and shell which have visited it
during the past few mouths.
It also appears that the explosion
on board the Tammdare was nura
nerious than at first aunounced.
Later reports fay that six men wore
killed and eight wounded.
The two disasters to tho rebels
have had the iffdot of considerably
disheartening them andit is report-
ed may cause a decided turn in the
tide in favor of Peixoto.
A Murderer Exocuted.
St. Louis Jan. 12. Sam Wil-
son the murderer of Clementine
Manning was hanged at 8 o'clock
this morning. His neck was broken.

In the Linlbicuui vs. Daniels ap-
plication for injunction brought in
the county court yesterday and
which was dismissed Daniels tiled
an answer in which ho alleged that
he agreed to do the inside and
mechanical work on tho newspaper
the New Southwest and plaintiff
was to edit solicit advertising and
conduct tho business. Ho was to
first pay all expenses and turn one-
half tho remainder over to Daniels
by the first of tho month. Defend
ant alleged that plaintiff neglected
his business and turned nothing
over to defendant.

fire. The loss is estimated at

A Brave Rescue.
Baltimoisk Jan. 12. This morn-
ing a Btrong gale has cost certainly
four and perhaps five lives and
gave the crew of the police bjat
Lannon a chance to make one of
tho bravest rescues in the annals of
Baltimore haibor.

running so high that the steamer
could hardly breast them a signal
of distress was heard. Tho searoh-
light revealed three men struggling
in the freezing waters all left of a
party of eight who had loft the foot
of Broadway to cross over to Locust
Point. Their boat Bwampod before

of the sailors aud the ferryman
sank before the Lannon could reach
them. The other three were taken
to the city hospital where the
doctors spent several hours in
restoring animation.
