The Nebraska Lecturer Says
the New Secretary of the
Treasury is a Daisy.
Galveston Tex. Feb. 1
Hon. W. J. Bryan left this
morning with ex-Gov. Hogg
L. T. Dashiell speaker of the
Texas House of Representa-
tives and a few Galveston gen
tlemen for a duck hunt. The
party will go twenty miles
down the bay in a steam
launch. They will return here
Wednesday when a public re
ception will be tendered Mr.
Bryan ancl he will lecture Wed
nesday night. In regard to
the statement of Lyman J.
Gage sent out last night by
the Associated Press Mr. Bry
an said:
"Mr. Gage is a daisy; green
backs should he says be retir
ed and silver purchased under
the Sherman act should be sugar in a large portion of the
sold and the treasury notes re island. So far as can be gatr-
deemed and canceled. Thenlered there is no general or
we oup-ht to have bank notes
that are redeemable only in
gold. And he also says the
government should not act as
a warehouse for either gold or
silver. There is no doubt
about Mr. Gage being a daisy.
I wonder it he should not like
to inaugurate a system by
which we would have to obtain
his permission each morning
to live throughout the day?'

SUGAR PLANTERS
IN CUBA.
Efforts at Washington to Re
lieve the Situation
Americans.
of
Washington D. C Feb. r.
The State Department is
endeavoring to relieve tlie
American sugar planters in
Cuba from the embarrassing
position in which they are si
tuated as a result of the atti-
tude of the Spanish authorities
toward those who attempt to
grind cane. Probably with
the intention of forcing all of
the plantation hands into the
town and so preventing them
from giving aid- and encour-
agement to the insurgents
the Spanish officials have sur-
rounded the grinding: of cane
with so many .nd vexatious
restrictions as to make it prac-
tically impossible to -make
even specific prohibition in
terms against grinding but
under the existing orders -the
sugar men find it impractica-
ble to grind. The Depart
ment of State has been em
barrassed in the effort to lodge
a protest by the difficulty of
finding official copies of any
order of prohibition by any
responsible person yet it is
necessary to do this in order
to have tangible evidence up
on which to find a claim fof
damages in behalf of the stigsf
men. So far the efforts cf tho
department have succeeded in
obtaining a removal of restnc
tions only upon the grinding
of burnt cane which is of son e
value while not of course
equal to ripened cane but the
efforts are being continued
and it is hoped will result bon
in an abatement ot all the
onerous restrictions complain
ed of by the planters.
