Baptist Chicken Dinner
Nets Fund Tidy Sum
The chicken dinner at the H. & S.
Cafe on Thursday night of last week,
given by the Baptist ladies, went over
with a bang. In fact, so many came
that there were'more people than there
v^s chicken. Many from Woodsboro
?i>ci neighboring communities took ad-
vantage of the opportunity of getting
a good chicken dinner and at the same
time helping the ladies of the First
Baptist Church in raising funds for
their new church building.
Somewhere in the neighborhood of
$200 was realized from the dinner.
Had there been more chicken and the
H. & S. Cafe been larger the sum real-
ized would probably have been larger.
For about three hours the cafe was
crowded, people standing and waiting
to be seated.
Following is a communication from
the Baptist workers thanking the pub-
lic for their generous response:
AN APPRECIATION
The funds campaign committee and
pastor and membership of the First
Baptist Church take this method of
thanking the many friends for their
gracious patronage, co-operation and
gifts that crowned the chicken dinner
with success.
Especially to we wish to thank Mr.
and Mrs. Shelton of the H. & S. Cafe
for their kindness, their graciousness,
and the magnanimous spirit of liber-
ality that marked their co-operation.
These good people let us have the use
of the restaurant and equipment and
furnished the kitchen help without
charge.
The crowds of people who thronged
the restaurant were waited upon by
the happy, smiling, vivacious “Mfcrrie
Maids,” an organization of girls from
the Presbyterian Church, who by their
charming ways and pleasant manners,
added their contribution to the success
of the dinner and made the patrons
enjoy it to the last mouthful.
Space will not permit a more ex-
tended account, but we do want the
good people of all faiths, Methodists,
Baptists, Catholics,
and Christians, as well as people who
embrace no faith at all, and the mer-
chants, the bakery shop, the vegetable
stores and everybody, to know that
we appreciate their splendid support.
We thank them from the bottom of
cur hearts.
School Teams Flay Ball
The volley ball team of the Refugio
High School played a garae with the
basket ball boys on Tuesday afternoon,
February 24. The girls came out of
the game the victors, the score being
50 to 46.
The boys declared they had never
played before, but the girls found it
hard to believe. Nevertheless, they
hope to have another game with the
boys soon.

Boiler Turns a Flip in Air
A boiler explosing at the O’Connor
No. 5 on the O’Connor lease, about
one-half mile southeast of town, cre-
ated quite a bit of excitement Sunday
night, and much property either was
destroyed or damaged. No one was hurt
but the drilling crew and others work-
ing in the vicinity of the well had the
scare of their lives. The well is being
drilled by T. P. Morgan.
It is said the boiler turned a com-
plete flip in the air and landed on its
end. It is considered almost miracu-
lous that no one was injured.
An Error
“Really, Bill, your argument with
your wife last night was most amus-
ing.”
“Wasn’t it though? And when she
threw the ax at me I thought I’d split.”
“Did your husband die a natural
death?” Mrs. Don was asked.
“Oh, no!” she replied. “He had a
doctor.”
