Vol. 1 No. 3----- P --- - -- - -- ---- ---- - --
ublished onboard U. S. S. TEXAS, GUANTANAMO, CUBA. 1 Feb. 1925A GOOD TIME WAS
HAD BY ALL
From the moment that De Heck'open-
ed the ceremonies as announcer, the
Smoker held Thursday evening January
15th knew never a dull moment.
First, there was the music of the even-
ing by Ensign Pearce and his Jazz Band.
This is a number that always brings ap-
plause. It is deserved.
The first half of the program consisted
of wrestling. Bouts were staged by Brown
S. A., Sea 2c., vs Stamper, C. S., Sea 2c.,
and by Mentleson, W. E., Sea. 1 c., vs
McCarty, W., Sea. I c. This was an ex-
hibition bout as the former is Welterweight
Champion, and the latter Middleweight
Champion of the Scouting Fleet. Their
clever work left no doubt in the minds of
the audience as to their claim to the titles
they hold. Ensign Nunn refereed the
wrestling bouts.
Boxing was the next item on the list.
Flyweight, Grande, A., M. Att. 2c. vs
Reyes L., F I c. Both these boys stepped
out, Reyes giving shifty and hard hitting
evidence of the fact that Grande will have
to "put out" if he wants to hold that belt.
Rose, W., Pvt. vs Johnson, H., F1 c.
showed class and form. We hope to see
them often.
Sid Taylor our old stand-by next en-
gaged Brazelton, G., F3c. This was Sid's
last fight, we hate to hear him say it.Needless to say it was a good bout.
The heavy weight affair which follow-
ed was a riot. All credit to the ambi-
tious marines who made their first appear-
anc before the public. De Heck, an-
nouncer, introduced one as "The Louis-
iana Wildcat" and the other as "The Tex-
as Steer." The editor got so dizzy fol-
lowing this scrap that he is unclear as to
which is which, in fact after the fight he
is doubtful if the main actors were. One
was Brown, H. C., Pvt. and his opponent
was Chernosky, O. A. also a private.
"They Say" that a bucket had to do
with the next encounter, well, whatever it
was there was plenty of action and at the
end, the referee, Mr. Billy Sebald, who
ought to know held up Lally's mit.
Turnage, although he took plenty of pun-
ishment was up and at it all the time.
Lally looks good and we hope to have
him fighting some of the Texas battles.
We'd give both of them a bucket to do
it all over again.
After the battle was over refreshments
were served. Great credit is due Ensign
Bell and his assistants, especially Chief
Boatswains Mate Clark who rigged the
platform, for a very Happy Hour.
WE THANK YOU!
On the date of 1 January 1925, the
first issue of the first Volume of the
Ship's Paper of the U. S. S. Texas, ap-peared under the title of "The Texas
Steer." Hereafter this fine Ship's paper
of the good ship Texas will be issued twice
monthly.
The Station News of Hampton Roads
wishes long life and great success to The
Texas Steer.
THE NAVY RELIEF
SOCIETY
The Navy Relief Society Drive is re-
ceiving excellent support from the officers
and men of this vessel. Approximately
half the entire crew contributed last pay
day, and equal success is expected on the
5th of February.
The majority of allotments come out of
the last pay day of each month, so that
restriction will not be imposed next pay
day. The other ships of the Scouting
Fleet are doing well but we expect the
TEXAS to come out "topside" and it is
up to the people who have not contribut-
ed to make it so.
If anyone is still in doubt as to the work
of the Society he should see his division
representatives or Ensign Bell who will
be glad to explain it.
A table showing the percentage con-
tribution for each division will be posted
as soon as the returns are in from next
pay day. To date the Signal Division is
the only 100 per cent organization.
What about your division?
