Investigation of the legislative
records aI.„sv that the 42nd Legisla-
ture was in session a greater num-
ber of days than any former Legis-
lature since.the organization of the
Hirst in 1840, with one exception,
and that was the 12th. The 42nd
was in session a total of 220 days,
131 during the regular and 89 during
the four special sessions. The 12th
Legislature was in session 201 days
during the year 1871, following the
adoption of th» new state constitu-
tion and the rescue of the State gov-
ernment from “carpet bag” l-ule by
■ the Democrats following the close of
f the war between the states.
By legislative action on the part of
^tlie Congress of the Republic of 'Tex-
the Congress ok the United
^tes, . annexed to the
on in 1845, and on the second
day in October of the same year
[voters adopted a new State con-
fction and at the same time elect-
Pinckney Henderson the first
|ernor of the new State, and Al-
G. Horton, Lieutenant Gover-
and the new members of the
fcisHture. On the 16th of Feb.
IK. t'ho officials-elect assembled in
ustin and organized the new State
Ifovernment. The new Legislature
Iremained in session S7 days. At the
■lime the new government was organ-
ised there were only 102,961 white
■ople in Texas and the taxable
Property of the State was valued at
[thirty-four million dollars.
From the beginning of statehood,
■Texas Legislatures have put in from
■oar to six months in session work.
■The first special session was held
[during the 3rd Legislature, and since
JhH close of the war between the
llates, only the 13th, 15th, 19th, 21st
Imd 23rd failed tn be convened in
,-cial session, but each of these
Legislatures were in regular session
H 12, 126. 78, 89 and 120 days respec-
tively. The 41st broke the record
■ with five special sessions. The 31st,
[::5th, 36th and 42rid each held four
[special sessions. The shortest SCS-
-ion on the record was the first call-
Jl f"'session of the 38th. Governor
■ Neff issued a proclamation convening
[the Legislature in special session the
[day following the adjournment of the
[regular session. A majority of the
[members of both houses objected to
[the special session following so close-
| ly the adjournment of the regular
session and voted to adjourn sine die
| immediately after the roll call on
convening of the two houses. It
lired less than one hour to com-
the transaction, thus establish-
a record for a short session of
r exas Legislature.

RESOLUTIONS OF RESPECT.
At a recent meeting of Co-
tulla Chapter Order of Eastern
Star, the f< owing resolutions
were unaniv ously adopted:
Whereat God in His infinite
mercy hai removed from our
midst our sister. Christie Steele,
and,
Whereas, in view of the loss
sustained by the decease of our
friend and sister, and of the
still heavier loss sustained by
those who were nearer and
cleared to her, therefore, be it;
Resolved, that in the death of
sister Steele, this Chapter la-
ments the loss of a sister who
was ever ready lo proiTer the
hand of aid and the voice of
sympathy to the needy and dis-
tressed of the fraternity;
friend whose upright and noble
lines were a standard of emul-
ation to her sister and brothers.
Resolved that the heart felt
sympathy of this Chapter be
extended to the family in its
bereavement.
Resolved, that these resolu-
tions be spread on the records
of the Chapter, a copy thereof
be sent to tne lumiiy or our
deceased sister, and to the local
paper.

BAPTIST CHURCH.
Preashing Sunday at li
o’clock. Subject “The Joy of
the Lord is Our Strength.”
Sunday night at 7, subject will
be “The Trial and Death of
Jesus.” Sunday School at 10
o’clock.
The pastor will deliver a ser-
ies of sermons on the "Trial and
Death of Jesus.”
This is a time when people
jare restless, dissatisfied, going
! about talking depression, but
1 they have never given a remedy
| that will relieve or cure. 1 am
(convinced that if we give our
time and service to the building
| up of the church and Christian-
; ity we will come out victorious
1 over all opposition. At the
; present there is a falling away
of attendance among all orders
j and societies, even so with the
i churches, but in the churches
there is always a remnant who
are faithful and hold up the
banner of the cross of Christ,
and not suffer it to drag in the
dust.
Be an optimist, just brush the
cobwebs out of the skies and
go forward, you will succeed and
gain the goal. If you have liv-
ed many years, you have passed
through the narrows. In fact
we have all been there, and it
is not always easy to see di-
vine control.
It looks as if things have got
out of hand, and some how or
other we have been forgotten.
When there is no one at hand
to say the following to you,
just repeat it to yourself, “God
i is faithful, who will not suffer
the pain to exceed the measure
if my enduracne.”
We extend a hearty welcome
to visitors and all and invite
you to these services. They
will enlighten and do you good.
