In the typewriting contest in New
York on Friday list which was con-
fined solely to the Metropolitan Sten-
ographer's association Mr W. J Ken-
in on the cahgraph wrote an aver-
age of seventy-six words corrected
matter for five consecutive minutes;
Mr J. R Geary on the Remington
was second with seventy-one words
ind Mr. F Appkgate on tne call-

The hive a strange brand of
whiskey just now in Baltimore at least
if we may judge of its effects upon
a man named Fatuck Dougherty
who was arrested after taking several
drinks in tint city on Friday last for
pretending to be a horse. When
discovered by the policeman he had
planted himself between the shafts of
a carnage and frequently knelt down
and drank water from the gutter. He
would neigh and paw at an imaginary
ittendant and several times started
to run awav with the vehicle.
The theory among yachtsmen now
is that the Thistle is to have a new
centerboard Her Scotch owners
have got her under cover again "un-
dergoing extensive repairs looking to-
ward an improvement of the speed"
and the result of all this it is said will
be nothing more nor less than the old-
time American centreboard All the
Scotch contingent believe that if the
'1 histle could have sailed closer to the
wind she would have won the cup.
There is a widespread impression
however among yachtsmen in Amer
ica says the New York Sun that noth-
ing can possibly be built on the other
side centreboard or not which the
indomitable Burgess cannot sail away
from.
Gincinnatti has established a fruit
auction sale market. The Enquirer
in noting this much needed innova-
tion says "In 1872 Jas A. Baird
was the only man in the city who had
bananas and twenty-five bunches
lasted the city a week. Now 500
carloads averaging 400 bunches to
the car and no bananas to the
bunch are sold yearly in this city
while 50000 boxes of oranges were
sold last year. Much of the fruit
spoils and to obviate this as well as
to enable Cincmnnatti to compete
with Boston and New York and Chi-
cago in the fruit business a fruit auc-
tion house has been established.
Tnere are 2000 fruit dealers now in
uncinnati and Covington so that
the plan will have plenty of backing."
Napoleon L Thiebhn well known
