H-S. U. Hosts B. S. U. Convention
1,500 Pledge Loyalty
As Climax of Session
Into the records today were writ-
ten the final sessions of a "best ever"
state-wide Baptist Student Union con-
vention, held on the Hardin-Simmons
University campus, Friday through
Sunday, November 3 to 5.
The convention was climaxed at
noon Sunday, when 1,500 student
leaders, from 40 Texas colleges and
universities, took a dedicatory pledge
to be "more loyal to Christ."
Attendance at the conclave, the
twentieth annual convention since the
state organization was formed in
1920, established a new high mark to
exceed that set at Texas Tech in
1937, J. W. Marshall, Dallas, state
secretary, announced.
The convention voted to meet in
1940 at Baylor University in Waco,
and set October 25, 26 and 27 as next
year's meeting dates.
William Kent, Texas A. and M.
youth leader, succeeded Charles My-
ers, Baylor, as state president. How-
ard Payne College, Brownwood, and
Texas State College for Women, Den-
ton, had the largest numerical dele-
gations.
In resolutions, the convention ex-
pressed appreciation of Dr. J. D. San-
defer, veteran H-SU president, and
dean of Texas college and university
heads, who is quite ill, for his "in-
terest and the exemplification of
Christ on the college campuses of
Texas."
The convention resolutions also ex-
pressed its thanks to Lem Paul
Henslee and the B. S. U. council at
H-SU, the host school; Miss A. M.
Carpenter, its faculty sponsor; Dr. R.
N. Richardson, and the "hundreds of
H-SU students who have served on
various committees." Thanks to
Charles Myers, retiring state presi-
dent, and to Rev. and Mrs. J. W. Mar-
shall, and to other convention leaders,
was also given.H-SU Flying Students
Pass Physical Exams
Dr. Julius Olsen, dean of liberal
arts, has the new H-SU civil aero-
nautics training program under way,
giving ground school instruction to
11 students who have already passed
required physical exams. L. E. Derry-
berry, Abilene airport manager, is
home with a new plane, two-place
cabin Piper Cub, to be used for flight
instruction, expected to begin about
November 15.

Talk up our homecoming for this
year. We have a good team and an
excellent chance to defeat the Jackets
again. The last four years have seen
us defeat HPC three times and tie
them once. Make your plans to be
here! Plans are under way for a
great time. Write to an old school-
mate and tell them you'll see them
here. If you have lost their address,
write to the Ex-student office and it
will be sent by return mail. We want
you here December 1 to help us de-
feat those tough Yellow Jackets! How
about it?
