Saturday, June 1, 1940, at the Hilton

of a movement to erect a building on
the Hardin-Simmons campus as a me-
morial to the late President J. D.
Sandefer.
In acknowledging the tribute to the
memory of her distinguished husband,
Mrs. Sandefer pledged "half the pro-
eeeds of an insurance policy, at his
express direction, as a gift to the
building fund."
Plans for the observance of the
Semi-Centennial celebration in 1941-
1942 were discussed and approved by
the ex-students. Jubilee plans include
a series of pilgrimages'and gatherings
during the anniversary year.

(Continued on page 3)Dr. Richardson To
Stay At H-SU
You probably suffered some un-
easy moments, along with the present
student body and other exes, as the
news that Dr. Richardson was to leave
H.-S. U. circulated. With the an-
nouncement of his intention of stay-
ing. on at H.-S. U., exes and students
are rejoicing in his choice. Dr. Rich-
ardson has, and is rendering an in-
valuable service to the University and
exes are happy he has chosen to re-
main. At least three major univer-
sities were offering him positions.
Dr. Richardson is teaching during the
first summer term at Oklahoma Uni-
versity.
Dr. White Declines
H-SU Presidency
Dr. W. R. "Bill" White, pastor of
the First Baptist Church of Okla-
homa City, recently advised that it
would be impossible for him to ac-
cept the appointment as president of
lardin - Simmons University due to
matters of extreme importance which
could not be cared for in his home
church.
Dr. White's message said in part:
"This has been the most difficult
decision of my whole public life. Your
offer to me of the presidency of H-SU
greatly impressed me. I was strongly
inclined in your direction. I felt that
it was a significant challenge to ser-
vice. I am convinced that H-SU is
on the threshold of a mighty future.
"Subsequent to your election, facts
and factors appear on a scale which
I did not foresee, making a most
thorough reexamination the part of
wisdom.
"Therefore, after prolonged, prayer-
ful consideration, I have come to the
conclusion that it is imperative that
I remain in my present position."
The editor had great difficulty in
placing a Mrs. Horace Carpenter of
Sweetwater until he learned that she
was the former "Nig" Hunt '29. Mis.
Carpenter is secretary to the general
manager of Western Windmill Co.,
of Sweetwaterp and an official of the
Nolan County H-SU Club.Do Your Part-Send a Good Student to H-SU This Fall
