’W'W Then Orange County
i/V/ resident Coleman Peveto
T T opened up his copy of The
Record Newspaper, he saw an article
about a young mother seriously injured
in an auto accident.
Peveto said the story struck a spark,
and he felt he just had to do something
to help Leanna Albair. who is still in the
hospital, paralyzed from the waist down,
with serious injuries. The single parent
has a five-
year-old
daughter and
a pile of
medical bills
that gets taller
every day.
"Her
Leanna Albair
mother said
the insurance
was only
about $20,000 liability in this case,"
Peveto explained. "It has probably
come close to that daily, and she's not
out of the woods yet!"
Peveto belongs to the Masonic Lodge
in Buna. He brought Albair's situation
to the attention of his fellow members
who agreed to come to her aid.
Saturday, Aug. 15, on Hwy. 62 next to
the Buna water office, Buna Masons
will hold a benefit barbecue from 9 a.m.
until they sell out. Concerned Orange
County citizens have rallied to help by
donating briskets for the barbecue and
money to the fund set up in Leanna
Albair's name at Bridge City Bank.
"We need more briskets, and I will
pick them up if someone calls to donate
them," Peveto said.
Ciara, Albair's daughter, is staying
with her grandparents while her mother
tries to recover in the hospital. Peveto
said he has talked to Albair's mother on
the phone, but he has never met any of
them face to face.
"We are Masons.” he said, "and we

BC Park dedication August 13
By Vicki Parfait
For The Record
W ridge City has a new city park
1“^ located in the same area as
the Senior Center, library and
baseball fields.
City Manager Jeff Ellington said it's
thanks to Wardens Keaton, Williams
and Haibin, guards and prisoners from
the Mark Stiles Unit of the Texas
Department of Corrections, and the city
plans to honor them with " a day of
dedication and gratitude,” Thursday,
Aug. 13, at Bridge City Park.
"We'll be having hot dogs and
hamburgers, and the members of the
Chamber will be there," Ellington said,
"and of course, the public is invited."
The concept for the park originated
with Leah Johansson's honors class at
Bridge City High School. They built a
scale model of their idea and pitched it
to the city council. They gave it their

approval and $5,000, appointing
Johansson and Tom Perry to get the job
done. Business, clubs and individuals
helped with benches and equipment.
All the contributions added up to
approximately $25,000.
"That is VERY little money, and it
really caused some frustration because
it took almost a year to raise that,"
Ellington commented.
Then to the rescue came some

County
commissioners
receive
construction
update
by Chris Farkas-for The Record
R MT onday, county commissioners received updates on
|\/l two of the county’s ongoing and much delayed
A T A construction projects.
Mark Magnuson, of Magnuson & Long Architects, Inc. of
Beaumont, provided updates to the county on the construction
of the building for the Precinct 2 justice of the peace and the
Courthouse Administration Building.
The JP 2 building has been under construction for nearly a
year and is currently more than 200 days past its contracted
date of completion.
One of the many points of contention with the JP building
deals with the roof over the new portion. The contract calls for
the new roof to match the current roof.
However, the roof that has been affixed to the building is
made of a different type material than the old roof and is lower
than the existing roofline.
“I have done some research on this and the three-inch rib-
panel on the current roof can be purchased but it doesn’t meet
the current building code requirements," Magnuson said. “It
doesn’t meet the wind storm requirements, it cannot be
mechanically seemed and we can’t get a 10-year weather
tightness warranty called for in the contract.”
