Changing Places
With Aging Parents
Your parent* always look care of
you as a child, and now that they’re
Vetting older, they night need you
to take care of them. If* a switch in
roles, and few people are prepared
for the emotional and physical
drain of these chafes.
Thinking about your future role as
caregiver may help ease the transi-
tion. When yon understand the
scope of your responsibilities, you
can create an organized plan to deal
with them.
The first decision that must be
wade is your involvement in the
care of your parents or elderly rela-
tive. Will you be the only person
giving round-the-clock care, or do
you have brothers and sisters who
are willing to help? Will there be a
medical professional to assist you,
either part-time or full-time? Your
family pharmacist or physician can
often recommend someone, ac-
cording to NARD, the national as-
sociation representing the inde-
pendent retail pharmacy.
Thinking It Through
Will your parents move into your
home, or will you be stopping by
theirs on a daily basis? Are there
medications that you will need to
administer? If so, arrange a con-
sultation with the family pharmacist
care, and can consult with you and
your parents at home.
You must also weigh other
responsibilities that may demand
your attention. Are there young
children in the house? Do you work
outside of the home, requiring you
to be away for most of tne day. If
you do, a nursing home or other
long-term care facility may be the
answer.
Once you decide to what extent
you wish to be invotved-and other
siblings, children and the patient
should ill be involved in this
decision—establish some
guidelines.
Set aside some personal time
every day. It is Important that you
maintain your own mental and
physical health. Take half-hour
breaks whenever possible, and if
the care is long-term, arrange a few
weekends away. Don’t be forced
into an uncomfortable situation. If
you are too tired to bring your de-
pendent parents to the pharmacy,
and the trip is unnecessary, put it off
until a better time.
Finally, be patient--your parents
are probably experiencing some of
the same emotions that you are feel-
ing. Independence is important to
everyone, and losing it is frustrat-
ing. Let your parents do as much as
possible by themselves.

Bubba Hubbard la back In Bridge City and back in
bualncaa at Rachal and Henry in Bridge City operating an
electrical contracting firm.
When I came to Bridge City Bubba was my true
benefactor. For three yearn I rented from him in the little
green house that stood where the Golden Triangle
Building stands vacant at Bland and Roundbunch. I paid
him rent spasmodically and never once did he complain.
If there la one person for the creation of the City of
Bridge City In 1970 It is Bubba Hubbard. His name was
on the lawsuit that was filed against Orange and Port
Arthur to let us Incorporate. His financial contributions
kept the city going during tough times. Bubba was also
the originator of the Idea of Bridge City Day and was
president of the Chamber when the first Bridge City Day
was held In 1969 at Hatton School. By the way. what
happened to Bridge City Day? The Chamber dropped it in
place of mayhawa. I know there are a few people
Interested In mayhaws. but If I were king, they wouldn't
have given up Bridge City Day for a may haw work shop.
But I'm not king.
Anyway. Hubbard’s business got too big to be little and
too little to be big. so he sou it and moved to Dallas. Up
there the S & L sharks got him. We know about that,
don't we. C.W.?
Now he's back in business, and it's a family affair with
his daughter. Jan. and btarson. Jeff, helping him. I'm not
in the business of recommending business, but his
compaity does outstanding work. Bubba is also my
neighbor. And a good neighbor he Is. Welcome back. C.W.
Luvya. Willie.

Sky advertising was introduced in America In 1908 when a plane
flew over Broadway towing a box kite rigged with a dummy on a
trapeze and a banner advertising a theatrical attraction.
