A WHOLE LOTTA SHARIN' GOES' ON
Well. I must admit the weather show men were right. They said no rain
for a week, and as I sit here, this early morning, the rain starts coming down.
It's been a week. They win.
A cool front moves throug^. and I'm ready for long-sleeved shirts,
bundling and cuddling up.
Boy, there's a lot of good stuff coming next weekend. The Shriners
Children's Hospital dance/auction is Saturday, Oct. 24. 8 p.m.-midnight at
the BC-Orangefield Community Center. One of the best bands I've ever
heard will play. A black group from Port Arthur, they do everything from
'40s music to present day. Lewis and the guys will amaze you.
Also on Saturday, David Bernsen will have a big shindig featuring
Wayne Toups at the VFW Hall in Orange. A fun night, indeed.
I've been out of town. I came in off the road last night, and I'm starting
from scratch. If I'm going to stay awake long enough to finish, I best get
started. So come along; it won't do you no harm.
EARLY VOTING WELCOMES YOU
It used to be absentee voting if you could prove you would be out of town
Election Day. Now. however, voting has been made so easy that not one
should fail to vote.
We have it pretty good if you count your blessings. It should at least be
worth three minutes to vote.
As long as Orange County continues to have a low voter turnout, we will
continue to suck the hind tit statewide. Orange County has lost several
appointments to state boards in recent years. VOTE! Let's make our voice
heard.
DOG TALE MISTAKEN IDENTITY
The Drug Dog is not the thief that steals from the blind. At least, not as
far as we know. According to Ken Wyatt, who saw the ruckus at the
courthouse, the pup was a lab and might have belonged to a deputy, but it
was not Constable Keith Merritt's drug dog.
Most folks found the story funny, even if it had been true. Most viewed it
as a joke. But apparently, the dog tale gave a couple of folks diarrhea.
So here's hoping this apology serves as Imodium AD and that little
children, who I'm sure don't read this column, don't think our county drug
dog is a poor role model.
Maybe it was McGrufT the Crime Dog stealing from the blind. I don't
know. See how easy it is to make a mountain out of molehill. Oh. well....

STIRRING UNTIL IT STINKS
I have nothing but praise for the way the TV media covered the Sheriff
Mike White civil case. They couldn't have been more professional.
Then you have the other side of the coin, where some media, desperate for
readership, think it best to drag the county down and make all attempts to go
negative with the story, hoping if they continue to stir it, then it will
eventually stink. Or the big city media who continuously trash Orange
County. They take an inch and make a mile out of it to put our county in a
bad light. Good ol' them; bad Orange County.
It's a dead issue; time to move on, but wannabe sheriffs will continue to
bait the media. Smart ones will run from the political hacks. Dumb ones
will take the bait.
Everyone who hasn't helped a friend in the past cast the fust stone.
Sheriff White and his staff have brought county law enforcement to a
high level. I'll be the fust to complain when they do something that hurts the
quality of law enforcement. Until then, the Sheriff's Department as a
whole has our blessing. It certainly doesn't deserve to be trashed over and
over. It's a done deal. Let's move on.
NUMBERS SOMETIMES LIE; VOTERS DON'T
Someone smarter than me has figured out if this part of the state is to elect
a senator to represent them. Orange and Jefferson counties will have to put
out a 67 percent vote for David Bernsen. That's nearly 7 of 10 voters, a tall
order for any candidate, but an unoffical poll shows him with 73 percent
now.
On the other hand. Orange County candidate Judge Don Burgess has the
benefit of more eastern counties to run in, and he seems to be doing quite
well in them. The Woodlands in Houston is where they run into trouble;
both their opponents live in the high-income, exclusive community that has
1.000 people a month moving in.
Turnout in both areas will be the factor-75 percent of The Woodlands
votes straight Republican.
A FEW HAPPENINGS
A lot of football this coming weekend. PNG visits WOS. The Indians
are for real and should be state-ranked. They are undefeated. However, the
Mighty Mustangs have got their offense together, and we all know they are
the state's No. 1 defense. It should be a good one.•••••Also the BC
Cards host former 5A Yellow Jackets, who for years were a powerhouse.

must to keep playoff hopes alive.^^^^^The LCM Bears should make
it three wins in a row as they travel to Lincoln.^^^^^Bill Clark

every afternoon on KTFA, but I catch his Sunday in the Country show.
He features old time gospel that you just don't get on the radio. We enjoy
pulling his leg. but it's not as much fun since he doesn't have all those
