Lone Star Lutheran
Editorial: About Elections
After last year's stagnant campaign
season, it seems as though things have
come alive this year, as nine students
are in competition for office. (Kay Woy-
tek is the only unopposed candidate.) If
you missed your opportunity to “meet
the candidates," as nearly 70% of the
student body did, you can have another
chance by reading the appropriate article
on page one.
Several of the candidates were pleased
with the turn out, but I can't accept the
excuse of “hunger" or “oh, I forgot" as
sufficient. Several candidates cited a-
pathy as one of the big problems at TLC.
How true.
You might be expecting these opening
statements to be the prelude to an editor-
ial on apathy, but I don’t intend to EVER
write about apathy. Apathetic people are
not likely to be the ones who'll read
ANY editorial in the Lone Star Lutherau,
so I'll make my comments to the ones
who are reading it now — the slightly
and more-so interested. And then I'll
ask you to spread the word to some un-
concerned person. He might just listen.
Most sarcasm aside, I want to repeat
something that's been stated time and
again the past two weeks. Those who
take office in the fall may very well de-
termine what happens to the college and
you as far as the social, academic, and
spiritual you is. concerned. If you're
not coming back to TLC next year, and
you don't care what happens to it and its
student body, don't vote. If you're not
coming back, but you do care, vote. And
if you are coming back, whether you care
or not, consider the candidates and vote.
Nearly every candidate who spoke
Thursday temporarily put secondary his
desire to be elected and emphasised the
impertance of voting in the election April
27. They said, “Consider all the can-
didates carefully, and vote for who you
want to represent you." All the can-
didates are concerned about TLC. More
than one of them said they were willing
to work for TLC, whether elected or not.
Another thing the candidates have in com-
mon is their desire for unity on campus,
and their ability as leaders who can at-
tain that unity! These candidates have the *
right idea. Since it is our policy to be
objective and impartial in these cam-
paigns, we will emphasize the necessity
for EVERYONE to vote in the coming
election, because when the entire student
body votes, those who are elected truly
represent the majority of students.
Don’t
Forget
to Vote,

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Dear Editor:
We feel this college is about
to lose one of the finest college
coaches in the Southwest. The
resignation of Coach Keller will
not only be a loss to our ath-
letic department, but also to tne
college and the community.
The athletic department has
lived for the past few years
mainly on Coach Keller’s repu-
tation. His influence and con-
nections with other coaches a-
cross the nation has brought
TLC national recognition.
And why is TLC about to lose
such a man? Because Texas
Lutheran’s administration is
stupid enough to listen to a very
small minority of “athletes” that
don’t wish to be disciplined. They
cry because they can’t wear
beards or shoulder length
hair and because they have to
wear clothes. We are not nec-
essarily against any of this, but
there is no place for these peo-
ple in sports—at least not at the
college level.
Athletics has always been
based on discipline and always
will be! If these few people
don’t like this, they should get
out— becair ‘hey aren’t athletes
anyway.
Now our administration is try-
ing to take away our coaches’
disciplinary powers. They tell
the coaches that they cannot tell
the athletes how to dress or wear
their hair. This gives the play-
er the power over the coacn. All thing to do with his decision,
this leads to is less and less Tf yon also notp thp ocorile si cm—
discipline. Soon the players will ^Zs ^r are Sl frem
tell the coaches when they wish to one gr0Up~they are athletes,
practice, and so on and so on non-athletes, from every frater-
• • • A nity and also non-fraternity;
But maybe TLC doesn’t want iong-hair and not-the only thing
football—or baseball—or bas- they have in common is their
ketball?? Maybe they wish to support 0f Coach Keller____
just drop athletics all together??
Well that’s good! Because
they’ve just taken a giant step
toward that goal!!!
Sincerely,
Alan Wells.

Dear Editor:
Mr. D.F. Newman, I think your
letter to the editor in last week’s
LSL regarding C.O.P.E. was in-
deed very “ ‘respectively’ sub-
mitted”.
Various organizations and in-
dividuals on this campus have,
from time to time, left “cute
little” signs in places other than
on their own property. Witness:
the lettering on the floor in Krau-
. . shaar basement, the roof which
Bervin Mirtsching was once on Open Stage, most of
Terry Kyle the desk tops in Langner Hall
Ricky Lamascus and the area near and around
Russell Reinhardt campus telephones. The sum
David Reinhardt of tke,s,e examPles and the “ex-
ample” you cited m your let-
Michael Heintze ter is that there are a lot of in-
Harold R. Huntlej considerate people at TLC. Since
Kenneth Mayfield each campus organization most

group on this campus, despite the
fact that some of your property
happened to be more directly in-
volved in one case than in an-

In regard to your present in-

would suggest a personal talk
with those involved. Pm sure
you will respect each other for
a peaceful solution.

Dear Editor:
I am submitting this letter to
the LSL to apologize to COPE.
Why? Well as most readers
know last week it was known
that some C.O.P.E. members
had scribbled on the LSL’s walls.
I did one of the so called scrib-
bles and my friend the rest. The
reason was that both of us had
seen you put writing on the walls,
and knew that you wouldn’t mind
because, you had informed us that
it was O.K. for us to do the same
thing. We therefore felt that the
scribblings would not harm any-
one or depreciate the value of the
office. We also felt that it
kind of went well with the dirty
floor, yellowing old newspapers,
etc. By doing this I brought em-
barrassment to a group of in-
dividuals that are trying to do
something about the world and
it’s troubles. I therefore ex-
press my apologies to mem-
bers of C.O.P.E. and any other
individuals that were embar-
rassed by this. I also on behalf
of myself, and as a human being
of the planet Earth, hope that my
act didn’t shadow C.O.P.E.’s goal
in its recent Earth Day pro-
grams.
Robert L. Salinas
place, COPE’S primary aim is not
to gain the respect of the cam-
pus; it is to do our part to sal-
vage our environment—that’s
YOUR environment, too, Mr.
Newman.
You did get one point right
we do need and want support
for our peace and ecology pro-
grams. If you refuse to wor
for peace and a livable envir
onment because two people “so
disrespectfully, inconsiderably,
and most certainlyunpeacefully**
added their peace symbol to a mu-
ral of trivia, I can only hope
that your irrational, immature
approach has the opposite effe
on the rest of the campus.

This is just a statement
would like to make, thanking Mr
Jandt and his staff for thei:
efforts to make TLC’s campu;
more beuatiful. The flowers neaj
the student center especially hav<
been a real delight the past fev
weeks. I don’t know how much
if anything, is done in the wa]
of personal recognition for these
men. But I think they deserve
our thanks in appreciation foi
'their work which adds a note o:
pleasure to our everyday routine.

Mr. Newman:
Concerning your “little” letter
to C.O.P.E., I’m going to ignore
the facts that you also chose to,
i.e. that an LSL staff member,
not a C.O.P.E. member was re-
sponsible for most of the paint-
ing that was done; that the LSL
office has never had particular-
ly immaculate walls, this admin-
istration nto excepted; that what-
ever was done had the consent oi
the editor; and that the “little”
issue you have chosen to cham-
pion is about as childish and ir-
relevant as they come. I’m going
to ignore those facts and get tc
the sentiments that are behind
the issue. Your letter illust-
rates the type of meaningless
if not detrimental reaction with
which concerned people are con-
tinually confronted. In the first
Dear Editor:
I was going to write a letter
pointing out Dave Newman’s re-
gretable distortion of facts in his
eagerness to complain about
COPE activities last week. How<-“
ever, someone informed me they
already have so I won’t repeat
what has already been pointed out.
We made some very nice pos-
ters that night and other nights in
the LSL office, to publicize our
Environmental Seminar Series
and other Earth Day activities.
Some 20 posters were put up
on the TLC campus last Satur-
day morning. By Monday, most
of them had disappeared.
I don’t know who ripped off
our posters or what their motives
were, but it seems to be a grow-
ing trend on our campus. If
people object to what we’re do-
ing, we encourage debate on is-
sues, not behind-the-back tricks
like taking down posters.
We are trying to promote public
awareness and action on environ-
mental problems. If someone
wants to promote pollution, feel
free to put up counter-posters,
but please respect our right to
freely publicize our programs.

ganization for Peace and In-
