Small towns have long been the
backbone of America. After all,
what came first, the small town or
the big city? The small town did,
most of the first settlers died their
first winter in America.
Youngsters living in a small town
enjoy a certain amount of freedom
that big city kids just don’t ex-
perience. How do you know if you
live in a small town? Here are few
symptoms of small town life:
1. Your Uncle is the Sheriff and
you can get away with murder. If
you get caught speeding, necking,
smoking, drinking or hot-rodding
in your car the Sheriff doesn’t ar-
rest you, no, that would be too
mean, he calls your parents instead
and they come and arrest you.
2. Everybody in town knows that
you have not been asked to the
prom and all your aunts and mar-
ried female cousins are conniving
to get you a date with a boy who
lives in the next town. His name is
Eber, he’s half a foot shorter than
you and he has severe sinus
problems.

3. You know that you are out past
your curfew even though your
watch has stopped, because the
town’s one and only traffic light
automatically goes off at 11:00 p.m.
4. Or you have no curfew because
all the stores close at 9:00 p.m.,
everyone over the age of 18 is in bed
and asleep by 9:30, and it is an hour
drive to anywhere that serves any-
thing remotely resembling
decadence.
5. The only thing served in a 200
mile radius that remotely
resembles decadence is the hot
fudge sundae served at the ice
cream shop in the next county.
6. The biggest social event of the
year is the 4-H County Fair.
7. Winning First Place in Poultry
division is a family tradition.
There are many other symptoms
of small town living, but because
this is a small town paper I can only
write a small column. Until next
week, unless of course I see you in
the next county at the ice cream
shop hoopin’ it up and living
dangerously with a hot fudge sun-
dae.
