OBITUARIES
Carl Best. 67, retired professor
of music for the HSU School of
Music, died Jan. 3 in Houston. He
made his home in Abilene. He was
appointed to the music faculty in
1963. He was a voice teacher,
director of the HSU Chorale, director
of the opera workshop, and chapel
music director. He was a member of
the HSU Former Faculty, Staff, and
Administration Fellowship.
Marylin (Mrs. Tom) McMillan,
who served as a missionary-in-
residence at HSU along with her
husband during furloughs from East
Africa, of Springfield, VA, died Dec.
2.
Wendell Iver Foreman, BA '25,
of Abilene, former school adminis-
trator, farmer/rancher, died Dec. 2.
He was a charter member of the
HSU Cowboy Band and captain of
the HSU basketball team while a
student.
Mrs. Islalou "Ila Lou" (Hol-
man) Moody, 90, of Liberty, former
director of Hunter Hall and a
residence hall director at HSU for 25
years, died Jan. 25. She retired in
1972. She was a native of Monahans
and lived in Liberty since 1980.
T.A. Patterson
Dies In Dallas
T.A. Patterson, 83, BA '27,
executive director of the 2.4 million-
member Baptist General Convention
of Texas from 1961-73, died
Monday, Jan. 8, in Baylor Medical
Center, Dallas, after a lengthy illness.
After retiring as executive
director of the BGCT, he was
executive vice president of the
World Evangelism Foundation
founded by W.H. Jackson, former
foreign missionary to Japan.
In recent years, Patterson also
served as chaplain and missions
teacher at Criswell College, Dallas.
Since 1979, as a resident of Trew
Home in Dallas, he led a ministry of
counseling and Bible study.Patterson
During his 44-year ministry as
pastor and denominational leader,
Patterson was pastor of First Church
of Beaumont; East Grande Church,
Dallas; Evans Avenue Church, Fort
Worth; First Church, Colorado City;
First Church, Hollis, Okla.; First
Church, Roscoe; and McComb
Baptist Church and Dixie Baptist
Church, both of Whitesboro.
He earned the BA degree from
HSU, and the master of theology
and doctor of theology degrees from
Southwestern Baptist Seminary, Fort
Worth. He also held the honorary
doctor of divinity degree from HSU.
The Thomas Armour Patterson
chair of missions has been estab-
lished in his memory at Criswell
College.
Patterson is survived by his wife.
Roberta Mae Patterson of Dallas; a
son, Paige Patterson, president of
Criswell College, Dallas; a daughter,
Mrs. Dorris Dawn Connelly, Topeka,
Kans.; a foster son, David Amad,
Baytown; and four grandchildren.
