By Theresa Qiarf^
A pattern tan tell you which cobra go well together, but it can
also suggest In which proportions they work best in your room.
Question: I am remodeling our living room, and I am in need
of some advice. In one of your previous columns you suggested
using the pattern from a fabric in the room. My sofa is flame
stitch done in beige, apricot and a gray-blue. I am having
difficulty deciding what color goes where. Are there any tips you
can give me that will keep me from making major timely and
costly mistakes?
Answer: This is a very commonly asked question, and one
that usually holds up the remodeling for many. You have been
given help already and may not realize that the answer is in your
living room right now. Professional fabric designers are expert at
handling cotors. Follow the designer's example and use it as a
guide when deciding where and how much of each color to use.
Work out roughly how much of each color is used in the pattern.
The largest areas of color, down to the small accent cotors. List
the parts of the room to be colored, from the largest areas, walls
and floor, to small accessories.
Don! stick too rigidly to the proportion idea if your dominant
color is dark and your room is small or you prefer a light room.
Your color scheme will be easy to follow and very versatile. I
would suggest apricot walls and curtains, gray-blue carpet,
accent pillows and tablecloth, cream painted wood furniture and
accents in terra cotta. Try using a lighter shade of the terra cotta
and of the gray-blue for some accents where the dark will not be
appropriate.
Tip: When the scheme is based on a pattern printed in
several colors, it is usually effective to pick one color, then go for
touches of a brighter or more intense version of the color. For
example, let us say that the fabric in your dining rom is a floral
print with light and dark green leaves, rose colored flowers and
some white in the background. The dominant color is light
green. The second is rose, and the dark green and white are
least used. The tip to a zest look is to use a bright rose, but
only for accents. Use pale green walls and tablecloth, dark
green topper with bright rose cording and rose placemats. Add
a white vase with rose colored flowers for a centerpiece.
