The X Factor from
Iron Malden in review
by Chester Moore. Jr.
re been three 1/2 yearn since
Iron Maiden released its last
album with singer Bruee
Dickinson, “Fear of the Dark."
The X-Factor is Maiden's return
to the forefront of heavy metal
and is Ns first effort with new
singer Blaze Bayley.
"Sign of the Cross’ opens the
70 plus minute opus and
assures the listener that the
mighty Maiden is still capable of
churning out some classic
music. The track begins with
some ominous chanting and
kicks into a heavy, mid-tempo
rocker that is reminiscent of
some of Maiden's early work Nke
’Flight of Icarus’ and
’Revelations’ from the ’Piece of
Mind” album.
The second track, ’Lord of the
Flies,” is my personal favorite of
the album. This song is akin to
nothing that Maiden has done
before. Lyrically, it deals with the
instinctual need to be close to
nature, and musically it is a
straight ahead rock song,
instead of the usual slammer that
Maiden produces.
Other hot tracks are ‘Edge of
Darkness" and "Look for the
Truth." "Man on the Edge" is
also worth mentioning.
New singer Blaze Baley fits the
biwel. Hto range is qu«e as big
as Dickinson, but he Is no
slouch. His voice Is probably
stronger than Dickinson's, it
definiely has a more masculine
tone, very forceful.
Bassist Steve Harris is the
reason that I started playing bass
when 1 was 14 and, once again,
he continues to amaze me.
Over the last few albums, his
playing has evolved ink) a more
melodic, song-oriented one
than on some of the frantic,
million mile per hour early work.
Since its first abum came out in
1981, Iron Maiden has always
been a musical force to be
reckoned with. The "X-Factor" is
not as good as albums like
’Powerslave" and ’Somewhere
in Time,’ but it proves that after
15 years of making music, the
Maiden metal machine stil has a
few tricks up Ns sleeve.

Diane and the Skater
BY GORDON BAXTER

My wife Diane it an
affecionado of ica skating. I
mean, N there ia ice skating on
the teNy anywhere in the world
she gets secret vibes and will
know about K. And there the
sit8, utterly entranced until the
show is over. Even if It's a three
day ice skating event of some
kind, I think the would subsist
only on snacks and soda pop,
but never budge from in front of
that screen. No sacrifice here,
she is utterly contented and
fulfilled in every way if she's
watching ice skating.
During ice skating shows I am
a widower, our daughter Jenny
is orphaned. It's strange. Our
Diane is sitting right there, warm
and breathing; sometimes I
suspect maybe even panting a
little, but from her family, her
home, even that stupid dog
Muttley and those sly sneaky
cats, Mommy is gone. Gone
away.
I don't have any candid
information to share here. Have
no idea of what she is thinking, if
anything. I've never heard her
say anything about dreaming
aha was an Ice skating star
when she was a Me girt. AN l
can gueea is whtf l can see in
her face, her eyes. There is no
doubt in my mind that watching
ica skating
la an ex-
perience in
beauty to
har. Our
Diane is not
a demand-
ing woman;
in fact. I can
think of only
this where
she is ready
one way
about any-
thing. In all
else she is
a tolerant
easy-going
lady of fine
manners. Not only that, she has
a full time job, for eight or nine
years has helped ease us
through the crunch of my
unexpected ’retirement” from
broadcasting. She is the
accountant at the local Red
Cross where they value her as
much as we do at home Buttor
Ice skating, I am a truly lucky
man.
I have bled to generate tome
interest in
watching ica
skating.
After al. she

much of my
life ia air-

and we can
share talk
about this.
But my mind
drifts off
alarmingly
when I try to
* sit and
watch ice
skating with
her. For in-stance, I always
wonder why the ladies are
always clad so scantily and the
gentlemen are fully suited up?
Doesn't it get cold out there on
the ice? But peer as I may, I
