"To kindle that spark of pride...in the hearts of all alumni..."
This "new" Range Rider represents some of the
improvements and changes envisioned for the alumni
program at Hardin-Simmons in the years ahead. The
longer I am in University administration, the more
convinced I become of the importance of well in-
formed, active, involved alumni for the well being of
the University. Alumni influence and involvement in
student recruitment, financial support, and "a word
well spoken" are essential to the success of the Univer-
sity in fulfilling our mission in Christian education.
As I look to the future, I am encouraged by indica-
tions of growing interest and involvement in Alumni
Relations by our alumni. At the University, we are
implementing plans and activities which will empha-
size the strategic role of Alumni Relations.
A full-time alumni director, Loraine Hendrix, is
now on board and will bring new life and energy to
the alumni office. I am impressed with Loraine's com-
mitment to the University and with her plans for
Alumni Relations.More and more alumni are involved in alumni chap-
ters around the nation, and plans for new alumni chapters
and meetings are underway for the next few years. Such
meetings provide opportunities for University personnel to
update alumni on current happenings on campus as well as
answering questions from alumni and receiving their sug-
gestions and ideas for making Hardin-Simmons a better
University.
We hope to bring more alumni back to campus for
classroom lectures, conferences, and meetings with current
students. These alumni will be selected on the basis of
success and recognition in specific vocational fields or
special endeavors. Students, faculty, and staff will benefit
from having these successful alumni back on campus.
Recognition of more outstanding alumni in future
years is another goal. In addition to the Distinguished
Alumni Awards, we hope to honor other alumni who excel
in various endeavors and activities. These will become role
models for current students.
University sponsored alumni travel opportunities
Swill be expanded in the future. You will read in this
edition of the Range Rider about a study trip to London
scheduled for next spring. I hope you will take advan-
tage of this and other travel opportunities with your
fellow alumni.
The purpose of this renewed emphasis on Alumni
Relations is to get more alumni involved in the life of
the University, to keep them informed about their
alma mater, and ultimately to kindle that spark of
pride which I am convinced resides in the hearts of
all alumni of Hardin-Simmons University. It is a
pride which I feel more strongly today than I ever
have in the past. It is a pride which is justified and
substantiated by the history of this school as well as
its current reputation. If you become informed
and involved, you also will be proud and support-
ive of Hardin-Simmons University and your
loyalty will be renewed and strengthened. As this
occurs with thousands of alumni across the
world, the future of the University will be
brighter and its successes will be myriad. I look
forward to working with you to this end.
