sions on the shucks and con-
tinues to produce masses of pink
spores on shucks until fall.
We have observed several
specimens of pink mold this
year. Once it shows up usually
pecans from the affected trees
are of poor quality.
• GRASSES—
Henry Christ is well pleased
with his Pitoria Bluestem
grass. Mr. Christ has demon-
strated around 40 grasses for
the county extension offices and
states that petoria bluestem is
the best that he has tried. From
the start of only a few ounces
of seed he now has enough to
plant several acres.

rainy spring weather is ideal
for the development of the fun-
gus that causes pecan scab.
The only control recommend-
ed is to spray with a fungicide
when the shoots and leaves are
tender and about the time that
the spores germinate. Once the
spores have invaded the tissues,
as they are at this time, it is
hard to control.
Pink mold usually occurs on
nuts infected with scab fungus.

Sgt. David L. Pavlas
In Germany Exercise
U. S. Forces, Germany
(AHTNC) — Sgt. David L.
Pavlas, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Frank J. Pavlas, Route 1, Shi-
ner, Texas, participated with
other personnel from the Sev-
enth U. S. Army’s V Corps Ar-
tillery in April Shower, a com-
mand post exercise in Germany
which ended in mid-June.
The exercise was designed as
a study of organization, dis-
placement of units, communica-
tions and logistics. All U. S.
corps and divisions within the
Seventh Army participated at
command levels.
During April Showers control
staffs fed problems and situa-
tions involving the activities of
a simulated aggressor force to
the participating commands.
These units then took the neces-
sary action.
Sergeant Pavlas, who arrived
overseas in December 1959 on
this tour of duty, is the com-
munications-center chief in the
artillery’s
tery.
He was
Ludmila’s
to entering the Army in June
1956.
His wife, Johnelene, is with
him overseas.

protected.
Each egg comes in a neat,
natural package that protects
the contents. But while the shell
looks solid, it’s actually porous.
If the atmosphere is hot and
dry the egg will dry out. If it’s
stored next to strong flavors,
the outside flavors will pene-
trate the shell.
So this rule is: Follow the ex-
ample set by the up-to-date
grocer. Keep your eggs cool,
moist and covered. Leaving the
eggs in a hot car for a few hours
while you finish shopping may
start a change from good to bad.
Eggs deteriorate quickly at

• PECAN SCAB—
Pecan scab is the most de-
structive disease in Lavaca
County. The fungus invades the
young rapid growing shoots and
leaves of pecan trees and at-
tacks the young pecans later.
The young nuts fail to. develop
and often a complete crop fail-
ure is caused from this disease.
Most of the pecan problems
that are coming into the county
agents’ office at this time are
caused by this disease. Cool,
