(continued from Front Page)

orary title of “Pastor Emeritus”
was conferred upon him by the
congregation of United Dr.
Martin Luther Church. On Sept-
ember 18, 1960, the Shiner con-
gregation, joined by numerous
friends from other parishes of
Synod, which he had faithfully
served during the course of his
active ministry, fittingly ob-
served the 50th ordination an-
niversary of Pastor Pfenninger.
On August 22, 1911, Pastor
Pfenninger was married to Miss
Elise Wagner, coming as his
bride from Otterburg, Germany.
Three daughters were born to
this union, all of whom survive
the father’s passing. Survivors
are his wife, who has been his
life companion for nearly fifty-
two years; his three children,
Mrs. Raymond (Elizabeth)
Dierksen of Shiner, Mrs. Frank
(Hanna) Grote of Silsbee, and
Mrs. James (Gertrude) Black-
man of Cypress. Also surviving
are six grandchildren and the
following four sisters and one
brother, Miss Dora Pfenninger
and Mrs. M. A. Ritzen of Nick-
erson, Nebraska, Mrs. C. B.
Arnecke and Mrs. C. R. Al-
brecht of Weesatche, and Ed-
mund Pfenninger of Nordheim.
Preceding him in death were
his parents, Pastor and Mrs.
Heinrich Pfenninger; two bro-
thers, Nathaneal and Sam Pfen-
ninger; two sisters, Miss Mar-
tha Pfenninger and Mrs. Gott-
lieb (Lydia) Friedrichs. A sis-
ter and two brothers died in in-
fancy or early childhood.
Of generally sturdy health
during practically all of his life,
and still quite active for his age,
Pastor Pfenninger sustained a
heart attack while at work in
his garden Monday morning,
June 3. He was taken to the
Frank Wagner Memorial Hos-
pital. Although seriously ill, ap-
parently no one, including his
physician, expected the end to
be so near. A second heart at-
tack Friday shortly before noon
rapidly terminated his earthly
life.
On Ascension Day evening,
May 23, Pastor Pfenninger ren-
dered the last official act of his
53-year ministry. On that eve-
ning he conducted the services
and filled the pulpit of United
Dr. Martin Luther Church.
Last Rites Held
For Mrs. Eggert
Funeral services for Mrs.
Louise Eggert, 82, of 1072 Bis-
mark St., Seguin, were held
Wednesday, June 5, at 3:00
p.m. from Goetz Memorial
Chapel.
Rev. Theodore Janssen, re-
tired Lutheran minister, con-
ducted the services with burial
in the Guadalupe Valley Mem-
orial Park.
Mrs. Eggert died Friday, May
31 in the Seguin hospital.
She is survived by her hus-
band, Richard of Seguin; three
sons, Edgar of Robstown, Os-
car of Seguin and Theodore
Eggert of Victoria; a daughter,
Mrs. Lydia Lamprecht of Vic-
toria; a brother, Eddie Windel
of Cuero; three sisters, Mrs.
Emil Frey of Cuero, Mrs. Clara
Coldeway of Hallettsville and
Mrs. Emma Spinks of Kerr-
ville; eight grandchildren and
nine great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Edgar Eg-
gert, Jr., Melvin Hinze, Jack
Abshire, Buford Turner, Ar-
thur Schmidt, and Archie Buss.
Those from Shiner attending
the funeral of their aunt were
Mr. and Mrs. Ben E. Eggert,
and Mrs. Ed Albert, Mr. and
Mrs. Herbert Albert.

Social Security
Man In Shiner
Monday, June 17
A representative of the So-
cial Security Office, Victoria,
Texas, will be in Shiner at 9
o’clock in the morning at the
City Hall on Monday, June 17,
1963.
Anyone wishing to file a
claim for retirement, survivor’s
or disability benefits should
meet him. He will be glad to
assist anyone having questions
concerning the social security
program.
* * * *
When an employed woman
marries she should announce
the event to the social security
office as well as to her personal
friends, Maurice E. Owen, man-
ager of the Victoria Social
Security District Office said to-
day.
“If she continues to work
without notifying the Social
Security Administration and has
earnings reported in her new
name, she may have difficulty
getting credit for those earn-
ings,” Owen continued.
“This is true because if our
central accounting office rec-
ords show that a certain num-
ber is assigned to ‘Ruth Doe’,
wages reported under that
number to ‘Ruth J ones’
cannot be credited. They
are held in a suspense file until
such time as the discrepancy
can be cleared.”
“Of course, the social secur-
ity office is not interested in an
engraved announcement; just
get a ‘Request for Name
Change’ from your social secur-
ity office or local post office.
Mail this completed form and
your social security card, if you
still have it, to the social secur-
ity office. You will receive a
new card showing your new
name and the old number. In
this way, you can be sure your
wages are posted promptly
without our accounting office
contacting your employer or
you later.”
Post card forms to be used
in obtaining a statement of the
earnings credited to your social
security account are also avail-
able at any social security of-
fice. The local office is in the
Federal Building at 312 South
Main, Victoria.

Mr. Lindsey stated that
prompt action is taken when-
ever an infestation is confirm-
ed. In most instances, additional
sterile flies are dispersed over
the infested farm or ranch and
livestock near the infested
premises are sprayed at pro-
gram expense.
“When samples are received
with no information as to
where it was collected, no ac-
tion can be taken”, the county
agent said. “This could permit
additional infestations to de-
velop because no special sterile
fly and spray treatment can be
given to the area.”

during the same period last

How can you get a “mike
reading” on your cotton?
Ask your ginner to apply for
this U. S. Department of Agri-
culture service, says Jimmie B.
Russ, in charge of Austin’s Cot-
ton Classing Office.
Last year, about 300 gins
served by the Austin Cotton
Classing Office applied for free
classing services available to
farmers in organized Smith-
Doxey groups.
Mr. Russ points out that all
of these groups are eligible for
the “mike” service at a fee of
8 cents per sample.
“But the gins must apply for
it under a special application”,
he emphasizes.
Applications must be receiv-
ed by July 1, so that the local
cotton office can determine how
much equipment and personnel
it will need to provide the
“mike” service to all gins ask-
ing for it.
“Last year, farmers in this
territory had nearly all of their
cotton classed—about 423,000
bales”, Mr. Russ reports.
“Since the ‘mike’ reading has
become an important factor in
selling cotton, we expect a large
share of the cotton we class will
be ‘miked’ also”, he explains.
The applicant may terminate
this USDA testing service at
any time by giving written no-
tice to the cotton classing of-
fice.
