"Tips" are Taxable
Hotel porters, restaurant
waiters and waitresses, and
other employees receiving tips
were reminded today by R. L.
Phinney, District Director of
Internal Revenue in Austin,
that tips are income and must
be reported on their individual
income tax returns.
“Tips, which represent com-
pensation to the recipients, such
as hotel, restaurant, and other
employees who are customarily
so paid, are taxable income.
“Tips paid directly to the em-
ployee and not accounted for
by him to his employer are not
subject to withholding. The
employee is required to file a
declaration of estimated tax if
his tips for the year exceed
$100,” said Mr. Phinney.
“These employees are urged
to keep accurate daily records
of tips received. If the taxpay-
er’s tax return is selected for
audit he will be asked to pro-
duce such a record to substan-
tiate the amount of tips re-
ported. The record need not be
complicated. A simple pocket
diary is sufficient,” Mr. Phin-
ney added.

Social Security'
Rate Changes
District Director of Internal
Revenue, R. L. Phinney, today
reminded South Texas employ-
ers that recent amendments
have changed tax rates under
the Federal Insurance Contri-
butions Act (Social Security)
aad filing requirements under
'tne Federal Unemployment Tax
act.
New F.I.C.A. rates on wages
paid on or after January 1,
1957 will be 2*4 percent each
for employers and employees,
a total of 4% percent, Mr. Phin-
ney said.
The changes in the Federal
Unemployment Tax Act, he ex-
plained, provides that employ-
ers who had four or more em-
ployees on at least one day of
each 20 calendar weeks during
1956 will be required to file
! Form 940 by January 31, 1957.
L The filing of Form 940, Annual
; Federal Tax Return of Employ-
ers, was formerly required of
! employers who had eight or
L more employees.
Mr. Phinney said that copies
of this return have been sent to
most of the employers in this
I district. However, he suggested
1 that employers who have not
received this form by January
9, obtain copies from your local
Revenue office.

COFFEE
A small group of friends
gathered for coffee at the home
of Mrs. Don Kaspar on the
morning of January 2. Every-
one enjoyed visiting together
and talking over holiday acti-
vities.
Mrs. Kaspar’s sister, Mrs.
Charles Borchers of Yoakum,
served coffee, for the hostess,
from a dining table also laden
with various tasty sweets and
snacks. Gracing the center of
the table was a large fountain-
shaped arrangement of silver
and red foilage and berries. The
arrangement was topped with
an irridescent tinsel that gave
an illusion of spraying water.
The color scheme of red and
silver was carried out in the
various other decorations
throughout the house.
After visiting together, the
guests exchanged wishes for a
happy and prosperous New
Year for everyone.
Guests during the holidays of
Mrs. Edgar C. Wolters were her
brother, Carl Schaefer, Mrs.
Schaefer and son, Quentin of
Sinton.
Mrs. Fred Kahlich of Slaton,
Mrs. Annie Heider and Mrs.
Edwin Boehm of Orange Grove
visited with Mr. and Mrs. O. A.
I Brieger Monday morning.

sheer wide yoke and long lace
paneled sleeves that tapered to
points at wrists. The long skirt
swept into a chapel length
train. A small crown of pearls
held her finger-tip veil. Atop
her late grandmother’s white
prayer book was her father’s
rosary, fashioned around a
white orchid and tiny double
stock.
