There is a lot more history
that goes with the Coleman
Post Office, but I will save that
for another time. That’s all for
this time. See you soon ...
until then ... have a great his-
tory!
/ welcome any comments or
additional information about
than that. The ladies buy ladies
gifts and the men buy men’s
gifts.
Also we are having drawings
for other gifts that have been
donated by the businesses in
Coleman.
Looking forward to seeing
everyone for some Christmas
fun.
Heading the list of donors for
the land purchase of the post
office building was B. C.
Howell, who I have written
about recently. He donated
$1000.00 toward the purchase.
For his donation and other
work in handling the red tape of
building the post office build-
ing, he received the honor of
turning the first spade of dirt in
the groundbreaking ceremony
shown here. B. C. is shown
holding the spade. Others in
the picture are: W. H. Fisher,
government inspector; C. W.
Martin, past president of the
chamber of commerce; Mayor
E. C. Edens; City
Commissioner J. S. Rogers; R.
I. Bowen, president of the
chamber of commerce; Sim
O’Neal, secretary of the cham-
ber of commerce, and Frank
Cannon, of San Angelo, in
charge of construction for
Christy-Dolph company. After
pictures were taken of the cer-
Coleman County. For more his-
tory of Coleman County, it is on
“The Net,” at: www.coleman-
history.com. You can contact
me at ralphterry@verizon.net or
check out my new website at
www.terrystudio.net. I am seek-
ing all old pictures of dwellings
and businesses that have been
located in Coleman and
Coleman County. Please don’t
toss out any old pictures, bring
them to Terry Studio. Reprints

But, let’s go back to the story
of the current post office build-
ing. The Coleman Post Office
prior to the building of the new
post office in 1931, was locat-
ed at 109 W. Live Oak Street.
It had been located here from
about 1910 to 1931. Prior to
1910, it was located across
Live Oak Street on the west
side of what was then the city
hall building, now Coleman

County Title Company. The
first picture shows the
Coleman Post Office in 1928,
at 109 W. Live Oak Street, with
a postal worker, probably Ben
F. Roby, postmaster, sitting at a
desk inside the building.
Work began on the new post
office building in the summer of
1931. The construction was
done by Christy-Dolph
Contruction Company of
Dallas. The second image
shows the groundbreaking cer-
emony for the new post office
in 1931. The Coleman Office
Building, now the Coleman
County State Bank is seen in
the background. The ground
breaking ceremony was held
on July 27,1931. The land on
which the post office building
sets today was deeded to the
United States government for a
consideration of $1.00 by
Annie M. and Roxie C. Watson
on August 26,1914. However,
$5,000.00 was paid to them by
a number of Coleman citizens
for the land. It took from 1914
until 1931 for Coleman’s name
to come up on the govern-
ment’s list of post offices to be
built.

COLEMAN POST OFFICE GROUNDBREAKING, B. C. HOWELL WITH SHOVEL,
201 W. PECAN STREET, 1931
Looking Backward
By Ralph Terry
Many readers of this article go
to the Coleman Post Office
quite often, especially at this
time of the year. And most of
us remember our local post
office being at no other loca-
tion. So, where was it before
its location at 201 W. Pecan
Street?
Coleman’s first post office
was located in the home of
Michael Maximus Callan
(called Pete, Marion and M.
M.), who was the first postmas-
ter. He was granted a post
office on February 7, 1876.
This was several months
before the city was laid out. I
have no explanation for this.
His home was later located in
the 200 block of E. Mesquite
Street.
A list of postmasters, and their
beginning dates, through 1985
are: Marion M. Callan
(February 7, 1876), John F.
Gordon (October 1, 1877),
Marion M. Callan (July 29,
1880), James Gipson
(February 20, 1891), Julia C.
