one of the

Morris said. He emphasized the
importance of a thorough safe-
ty inspection of the car before
starting a motor trip.
“Texans now have the op-
portunity to take advantage of
their new motor vehicle inspec-
tion system which offers a uni-
form safety check at convenient
locations throughout the state,”
he said. “What better time to
get that inspection than just
before the summer holidays?
At the same time, you are free-
ing your mind of worries over
the mechanical performance of
the car and taking out an in-
surance policy on the safety of
your family and yourself.”
The inspection stations will

The age of wonder drugs—

the oldest and still
best remedies for
ills—rest.
The Texas Safety
would like to see restful vaca-
tions this summer, instead of
the usual competitions to see
who can drive the farthest and
fastest and play most danger-
ously.
“A restful vacation is more
likely to be a. safe vacation,”
said W. Carloss Morris, Jr., a
Houston Attorney and President
of the Association. “And the
statistics of summer accidents
certainly should make all of us
think about safety.”
A motor vehicle accident is
the most likely mishap to spoil
vacation rest and fun, but many
of them could be avoided with
a little advance planning, Mr.

ROTARY CLUB
Shiner Rotary Club met
Monday, June 30, at Betty’s
Cafe. The visiting Rotarian was
Rev. Henry Smith of Halletts-
ville.
Percy Garbade, program
chairman of the day, presented
Vincent Ogletree of Houston.
His topic was “The Socialistic
Public Housing Story.”
In summing up his presenta-
tion, he said, “we are opposed
to Socialized Public Housing
because:
“1. Public Housing is de-
finitely socialistic and the hous-
ing industry was the first to be
socialized in England. Public
Housing is already a political
plum in this country.
“2. Socialized Public Housing
is not slum clearance. Under
the present law, these social-
ized projects are almost built
on vacant property. Other cities
have not cleared their slums
and there is no reason to be-
lieve that the situation will be
different here.
“3. Socialized Public Housing
does not house the charity and
welfare cases. Records show
that the people who really need
help do not get it from public
housing.
“4. Socialized Public Housing
does not upgrade the families
who live there. In fact, the op-
posite is very apparent. Isn’t it
true, ladies and gentlemen, that
people, not houses create slums.
Our forefathers who settled
this great State lived in dug-
outs and sod houses, but they
did not live in slums. We con-
tend that home ownership is
much more desirable than is
Socialized Housing.
“5. Socialized Public Housing
is not free and is not intended
to be. Using the government’s
own figures, you as a taxpayer
will pay 60% of the costs of
these socialized units.
“6. Socialized Public Housing
is unsound economically. The
costs are completely out of line
with privately built construc-
tion.
“7. Socialized Public Housing
is luxury housing. Each unit
built will cost you over $17,-
000.00 as a taxpayer during the
40 year period that it is to run.
“In closing, ladies and gentle-
men, I urge you to study these
facts and then decide whether
you want this socialistic project
in your city. Remember, a little
Public Housing is like a little
cancer. Neither can be con-
trolled without complete re-
moval.”
